Jamestown Whip Artist to Appear on Local PBS Show

GREENE COUNTY, OHIO - Local writer and whip artist Gery L. Deer of Jamestown is set to appear on the local PBS program, Our Ohio. Produced by public broadcasting station WPTD / Channel 16 in Dayton, Our Ohio showcases the lifestyles, heritage and culture of the Buckeye state.

The focus of the episode will be education and performance opportunities available through The Whip Artistry Studio. The Ohio-based western arts school is the only facility in the U.S. dedicated to the non-combative study of the bullwhip and stockwhip as a sport and performance art for all ages.

In addition to stage shows from Dayton to Las Vegas, Deer has appeared on several national television programs including America's Got Talent and The Bonnie Hunt Show. He is also a performer and writer with The Brothers & Co. Entertainers music and variety show but may be most recognized in southwest Ohio as a journalist.

As a feature and commercial copywriter, Deer has earned several nominations for awards in journalism and provides content for marketing firms, public relations companies and businesses requiring on-demand copy writing services. His weekly op-ed column, Deer In Headlines, is featured in a dozen print and online publications including the Xenia Daily Gazette and Fairborn Daily Herald.

The public television segment will also include a unique interview with whip student Jim Nash, 67, of Beavercreek, who took up the whip in 2002 as a way to get more exercise in his retirement. "I really enjoy the way I feel after a whip lesson," Nash told the Our Ohio producers. "It is challenging and physically rewarding and I will keep going as long as I can."
