News outlets all over the country have picked up on this story, yet I have yet to hear the words "statutory rape". According to OK magazine, Aldridge and Spears had been dating for quite some time and originally met at church. The media is doing everything possible to respect their privacy and make them look like a charming mature couple when this is clearly not the case. Lynn Spears is still a child under California law.
If they had been dating, then there's a good chance that mother Lynne Spears knew about this coupling. Even if she had no idea how intimate their relationship was, what kind of mother allows their sixteen-year-old to date someone over eighteen? Has she lived under a rock all of these years? Does she not get that teenagers, and not just in Hollywood, pretty much want one thing out of a relationship? A rational parent would have been more cautious and stopped the relationship before it had a chance to go anywhere.
Aldridge has been photographed with Spears before and the pictures are being sold through Getty Images. Especially now that he has knocked her up, when companies purchase these pictures to publish, they are essentially condoning statutory rape. Why give this guy positive press (a.k.a. bad press is good press in Hollyweird) when we should be seeing his mug shot instead?
Similarly, anyone reporting on Spears' pregnancy without pointing out the problem with the age difference is essentially condoning statutory rape. Young fans of Jamie Lynn are hearing about her pregnancy for the first time through these media outlets and aren't getting the message that what Aldridge did was against the law, let alone that it's not right to have a child at such an early age.
The legal age of consent in California, as well as many other states is eighteen. This makes Casey Aldridge a sex offender, no ifs ands or buts. Why then are media outlets continuing to dismiss this? A right to privacy is one thing, but when laws are broken, especially regarding minors, action needs to be taken and taken publicly so other young men and women can learn from their mistakes.
So, move over single parents in Hollywood and make way for the newest trend - having sex with a minor, being paraded around in the media and then asking for privacy. Mazel tov y'all!

Post a CommentIm tired of this stautory rape thing. Both were willing participants of acts bewteen teens that have gone on for years. Think back a hundeded or more years ago when laws didnt exist. Girls dated and married men much older than them. Now some kids run out of control and t could apply but if parent slooked after their kids more closely there would be no need of such laws. What if the situation was reversed and the boy underage? WOuld the same law apply?
First of all, true it is technically statauory rape- but think about EVERY other teenager out there that ould easily be pregnant. If Jamie wasn't a star in the normal world she wouldn't be a such a big, she'd just have people telling her good luck and other shaking there heads in shame. Second of all where I'm from as long as the parents say allow it than 16 year olds can date those over 18 without any cops. And third of all, if they met at church obviously her mother knows him well and they've been dating for a while therefore Lynne G. when it happens you'll get over it. If your 16 year old who would be say what? A high school sophomore was dating a high school senior who maybe stayed back a year-- I highly doubt that you would say absolutly not to her dating him. And if you would or do, than don't be suprised when she leaves you once her college years come. Good luck to Jamie-- although I am not sympathizing her she put herself in this situation I hope it goes alot better than her s
I love your title... it is exactly what I have been thinking... on the positive side...she chose the difficult route and decided not to have an abortion.
Good point Jeff. I just think laws are set in place for a reason and should be enforced. To take it a step further, the punishment should depend on the age difference like you said. As a mother of two daughters I know I wouldn't stand idly by while some kid who thinks he's above the law takes advantage of one of them, that is if he could get past me first. ;)
While I think statutory rape laws are a bit arcane (there is only a 3 year age difference, after all) I too find the lack of "bringing it up" by the media (or law enforcement, apparently) troubling. I'm sorry I can't remember his name, but do you recall the kid who was still under 18 and his gf was only a couple of years younger, who was sentenced to 10 years (in Fl, if memory serves?) What gives? Oh yea, he is black in the South..
