What exactly happened?
Jane Fonda and The Vagina Monologues writer Eve Ensler were being interviewed by Meredith Viera. Jane Fonda began describing her reason for joining the Vagina Monologues. She said that she hadn't seen the play and mentioned that she is from Georgia. She continued saying "I was asked to do a monologue called C*nt." (That word is slang, referring to a part of the female body.) She then said she told them no, that she had enough problems. Meredith Viera chuckled during the interview and when she said the C-word, but later apologized on the behalf of everyone. Jane never gave a public apology herself.
I should also tell you that today is also the 10th anniversary of "V-Day," the day Ensler created to stop violence against women and girls globally. Jane's use of the C-word surely didn't help to show support for "V-Day."
Keep in mind that this show is live and supposed to be suitable for families and children to watch. Therefore, after a newsbreak, Meredieth Viera had to make a public apology. "We were talking about The Vagina Monologues and Jane Fonda inadvertently said a word from the play that you don't say on television. It was a slip and obviously she apologizes, and so do we. We would do nothing to offend the audience. So please accept that apology."
The word keeps spreading about her incident on the Today Show this morning, and that has Google reporting Jane Fonda searches have become a hot trend all morning. People from all over are searching for the videos and stories about the event. If you too are interested in viewing the video clip of Jane Fonda's interview and use of the C-word, click here. (Note: the C-word is NOT bleeped out in this video.)

Post a CommentI enjoyed your take on the incident, and agree with your opinion! I dunno, that just isn't a word that pops out of my mouth (although I've been guilty of other incidents of inopportune profanity...not on national TV though!) Reminds me of the Janet Jackson thing awhile back. I actually WATCHED that one, and was a few beats late catching on. Did we really see it on national TV? Or, in this case, was that what I heard!? Great take on the topic! KIM
