If You're Moving, You're Grooving

Janene Jaynes knows a little about movement. After all, the Utah woman teaches Pilates, Zumba, Yoga, Power Yoga, Pump, Turbokick, Dance Conditioning and cycling. So it came as no surprise to those who know her that National Dance Day was on her radar.

Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer and co-creator of the FOX series 'So You Think You Can Dance' came up with the idea of National Dance Day, which is July 31st. The purpose is to get people moving through dance and exercise.

Janene was excited about National Dance Day, but was disappointed to find no events were planned for Utah County. That's when she took action, spearheading National Dance Day Utah. The Dance Extravaganza will take place at the McKay Events Center in Orem, Utah from 4 to 10 pm July 31st.

Tickets are $10 for VIP Floor Seats and $5 for General Admission. Proceeds will benefit Dancers for Haiti, local Utah scholarships and the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which was co-founded in 2009 by Lythgoe and director Adam Shankman. Its purpose is to provide underprivileged youngsters with the opportunity to realize their dreams of dancing and to support and increase dance education in the United States.

With help from her mother Shirley Hopkins, who used her graphic arts experience to create a website, and husband Nathan Jaynes, who assisted with design and marketing, the event began to come together. Others volunteered to help, including Shawna Henry, owner of Elevate Mind and Body, who made calls, contacted vendors and sold more tickets than anyone else.

"I truly have a passion for helping, and making a difference," says Janene, who successfully urged massage therapists to donate their time to raise funds after the events of 9-11. In addition to her other work and activities, Janene has been a massage therapist and is past chairman of the Massage Therapy Education Peer Committee.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), has gotten into the act as well, and will introduce a National Dance Day resolution at a press conference July 31st in Washington, D.C. She will host a dance event on the National Mall between 3rd Street & 4th Street SW from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event will feature local dancers and representatives from dance organizations, with former 'So You Think You Can Dance' finalists taking part.
