Janet Evanovich My Favorite Novelist

If You Want to Read Entertaining Stories, Try Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Series

Pearl Grace

I have many favorite novelists. However, if you're looking for a novelist who writes great stories, good mysteries and even better comedy, consider reading Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, beginning with One for the Money.

Janet Evanovich -- A Brief Biography

Janet Evanovich's website provides a brief bio. She graduated high school from Black River High School in South River, New Jersey. She went on to attend Douglass College in New Jersey for 4 years where she studied art. On her website, Evanovich admits she wasn't really in to the art at all and instead, tried to find another way to communicate with others.

By her own admission, Evanovich started writing strange stories, submitting them to various publishers over the years. She claims on her website that after she filled a large box with all of her rejection letters from publishers, she burned them and applied for a job at a temp agency.

Four months into her career as a temp, a publisher called and offered to publish a manuscript she'd submitted from her "Second Chance at Love" stories. She agreed and received a small payment. This event energized her writing and she spent some years writing romantic novels for the Bantam "Loveswept" line from that time.

Evanovich and her husband, Peter eventually moved to New Hampshire in a large home near the water where she began writing her Stephanie Plum novels. She admits she spent considerable time with people in law enforcement to help her formulate her incredibly successful line-up of mystery comedy stories with her silly protagonist, Ms. Stephanie Plum.

According to the New Jersey website, Evanovich now resides in Naples, Florida. As of this writing, 22 novels in the Plum series have been completed, with the latest being Smokin' Seventeen.

Evanovich has written two others series, the Diesel and Tucker series and Alex Barnaby series. She's co-authored numerous romances and wrote several romances herself initially in her writing career. She's penned children's books and even a few nonfiction works.

Analysis of Janet Evanovich's Work

Some type of mystery is afoot. Someone is missing, has been killed, or something's been stolen. Evanovich's main character, Stephanie is unattached and has a problematic love life. She isn't sure what she wants and might even possibly be commitment-phobic. She's unsure of herself at times. At others, she's too sure of herself, even to a fault.

In essence, Stephanie is flawed in many ways, yet always manages to get herself out of a jam. Whether it's money problems, relationship struggles, or family crises, Stephanie prevails in the end. And what it takes to reach that end is a heck of a story.

An important ancillary character in the Plum series, Lulu, brings more comedy and real color to the novels. Lulu, in a sense, is Stephanie's sidekick or "partner in crime." They end up in all kinds of trouble. Lulu reminds me that no matter where someone's been, they can change, at least to a certain degree (except for their short and tight spandex skirts).

My Favorite Janet Evanovich Novel

I've read every Stephanie Plum novel through Fearless Fourteen. They are each one as funny, sometimes, funnier than the next. Rather than pick one favorite, I'll pick this entire series, beginning with One for the Money.

Why Janet Evanovich is one of my Favorite Authors

Janet Evanovich is one of my favorite writers because I can depend on her. I know that when I pick up one of her books that I haven't read, it's going to sweep me into the story immediately and take me on a real ride. I'll be trying to solve the story before I get to the end and laughing out loud all the way.

I love how Evanovich portrays comedy through her quirky, yet believable characters. I am fascinated by each of the main characters in Evanovich's Plum series, for different reasons. I know before I open one of Evanovich's books that I'm going to be entertained and provided a great escape.

What will Stephanie and Lulu get into next? Has Grandma Mazur gotten into trouble lately? Whatever the theme of Evanovich's next Stephanie Plum series novel, it will be my favorite.
