January 1, 2011 or 1-1-11 has arrived, a date that won't repeat itself for a century. While 1-1-11 it isn't really a palindrome, it is still an interesting number to consider, beyond the obvious fact it is New Year's Day!

Oprah's new network OWN is launching on January 1, 2011. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there will be a reported 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million.

The Rose Bowl takes place January 1, 2011 in Pasadena, CA; the Fiesta Bowl Game takes place in Glendale, AZ; the Gator Bowl will be played on January 1, 2011 at the EverBank Field in Jacksonville, FL; and the Outback Bowl will be held January 1, 2011 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL,

J. D. Salinger, author of Catcher in the Rye was born on January 1, 1919. Senator and 1964 Republican Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater was born on January 1, 1909. Silversmith and U.S. patriot Paul Revere was born on January 1, 1735, and Betsy Ross, who went on to sew one of the first American flags, was born on January 1, 1752.

A slew of Russian cosmonauts were born on January 1 of various years including Anatoli Borisovich Polonsky and Russian Sergei Vasiliyevich Avdeyev, Svetlana Georgievna Beregovkina, Yevgeni Vladimirovich Saley, Nikolai Tikhonovich Moskalenko, Alexei Ivanovich Bobrov, Vladimir Georgiyevich Titov, Gennadi Vassilyevich Sarafanov, and Valentin Nikolaevich N Benderov.

January 1 in History

On January 1, 2002, the Euro became the official currency for most of Europe. In following years, several European nations switched to the Euro on January 1, including Slovakia in 2009; Cyprus and Malta in 2008; and Slovenia in 2007.

January 1, 2000 found Y2K resulting in a few minor computer-related problems as Millennial celebrations occurred worldwide without incident. On January 1, 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect, and on January 1, 1966, all U.S. cigarette packs had to start carrying the warning "Caution Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health."

Elvis Presley recorded Heartbreak Hotel for RCA in Nashville on January 1, 1956, and Emperor Hirohito of Japan announced he was not a god on the same date in 1946. Reportedly, on January 1, 404, the last gladiator competition took place in Rome.

Finally, a 1-1-11 passage from the Bible--Acts 1:1-11:

¹ In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach ² until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. ³ After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. ⁴ On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. ⁵ For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
