January 2012

Julie Wimmer
January can be a blue month. The holidays have passed and it might be cold or snowy or rainy or dark wherever you are. But things do happen in January, and finding out what some of them are may help you with ideas to keep your spirits up.

NFL Playoffs
If you are a NFL football fan, and even if you're not, Januray is the last hurrah for winning teams (as well as some wild card teams) to battle it out for the conference and then the Superbowl.

Wintertime and the Weather
Winter begins in December, however, it seems that in January we can focus on it more since we don't have holiday preparations to worry about. January also happens to be a pretty busy weather month in the US, so if this is something that interests you, there will be a lot of information to find.

A Great Month to Start Dating
When I was single, I remember that November through December were horrible times for dating, unless you were already involved with someone. The holidays, Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and the like are all very family oriented. Not exactly a great time to start getting sexy with someone. After New Years, you have a fresh start. Go to the gym, or join a club or whatever, but it's a great time to focus on yourself if you are looking to meet someone.

Famous January Dates
Lots of things happened in January, as in any month, but why not take some of these things and make something of them.

On January 13th in 1930, the Mickey Mouse cartoon made it's first US, newspaper appearance.
-Plan a trip to Disney, do some research on cartoons in the 1930's, make Mickey Mouse pancakes for the kids or have a whole, Mickey Mouse themed day

On January 15th in 1929, the great Martin Luther King was born. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. In his lifetime, he fought for rights for African Americans andwon the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assasinated in 1968 - his life cut way too short.
-Go to an African American History Museum, look up old articles about King at the library, teach your kids about King and his significance or just honor him by giving to those less fortunate.

On January 28th in 1935 Iceland was the first country that legalized abortion. It's surprising that something so modern-minded happened so long ago.
-Do research on this subject, give to a Planned Parenthood, no matter your views on this, research the different sides, pros and cons, or become a foster parent or big brother or sister to someone in need.
