Japan Earthquake Moves Brazil

Carlos Rix
"Liberdade is São Paulo's own equivalent of Japantown in the USA." - Wikipedia. It is a tourist district in Sao Paulo city, which is the capital of the state of São Paulo. Liberdade is also the largest Japanese colony in the world - many Chinese and Koreans also live in the same district.

As we walk through Liberdade streets it feels like Japan, sometimes like Asia. Just a week ago I was at Liberdade. I love Japanese food but this time I went for some delicious Korean food.

Maybe nowhere outside Japan the earthquake was stronger than in Liberdade. Whole families were desperate for news from Japan as soon as they heard of the catastrophic events. 250 thousand Brazilians live in Japan!

As major TVs fails to give accurate news Facebook, Orkut, Youtube and other web based social media covered the gap. On TV you could see old Japanese people talking to their relatives back home.

Nagoya is the city where most of the Brazilian population is located some 453 mi from the epicenter. Nevertheless many parents are still without a single notice from their kids.

The Brazilian government has already offered help. 1 million Japanese that live all over the Brazilian territory are concerned and praying for Japan, for their relatives and their kids.

The Japanese are not alone. After more than 100 years they have earned a place in the hearts of all people, they are Brazilians. All over the country people of all races and backgrounds are united with them.
