Jason Natural Toothpaste: A Review of an Organic Oral Care Product

Healthy Mouth Plus CoQ10 Brightens and Cleans, but How Does it Taste?

D. S. Ploshay
I've been eating a lot healthier lately, namely because I've been trying to eat organic as I can. So, since my tastebuds seem to enjoy organic food it only seemed natural to clean my mouth with organic toothpaste, too.

At my most recent trip to Wegman's I became lost in the organic section. It was like a healthfood grocery and drug store inside a large supermarket. After picking out some cereals and grains, I had the idea to try out some organic toothpaste. I used Tom's All Natural Deodorant in the past and also heard rave reviews of the brand's all-natural toothpaste. I was set on finding that. Wegman's didn't offer any Tom's products, so I scoured the shelf for an alternative.

THE PRODUCT

There were many brands that looked appealing from the packaging. I ended up choosing an organic toothpaste from the J/A/S/O/N line. Jason offered a few different flavors and formulas, but the one I settled on was called Healthy Mouth Plus CoQ10 Gel Toothpaste.

The Healthy Mouth Plus contains the CoQ10 to help provide support for gums and periodontal care. According to the product description, this type of Jason toothpastes is also enriched with certified organic tea tree oil and aloe vera gel to help soothe and heal gums. The flavors Jason chose for the Healthy Mouth Plus are intended to rid users bad breath: tea tree, clove and cinnamon.

MY RESULTS

The evening I bought the tube of Jason Healthy Mouth Plus toothpaste, I decided to use it-even though my tube of Colgate wasn't finished. I squeezed out a small about on my toothbrush. The light green color of the gel looked natural and appealing, and it even matched my green toothbrush.

When I began to brush my teeth, to be honest I was quite confused. I thought I had dropped some soap on my toothbrush. Maybe my fiancé dropped my toothbrush into a soapy sink and forgot to tell me. I literally felt like I washed my mouth out with soap. After I was through, my teeth did feel very clean. So did my whole mouth. I ran my tongue across my front teeth and they felt smooth and clean. However, I could not take the aftertaste. I rinsed with some vanilla mint flavored mouthwash. Without that splash of minty mouthwash my mouth wouldn't have felt refreshed like it usually does after brushing my teeth.

I waited to write this review for a few weeks so that I could see if I would get used to the taste. I have. It's still not as great as a mint paste. But, when things are natural it will take some adjusting. I have probably just become so used to synthetic sweeteners that I can't fully appreciate the taste of natural oral care products.

I have noticed that my teeth are whiter, which was a surprise. This paste is not billed as a whitener, so I didn't expect it. For this reason, I may continue with the Jason natural toothpastes, but my try another flavor when this one runs out. I seemed to pick the only kind that isn't somehow minty.

Other toothpaste formulas and flavors:
Oral Comfort (For sensitive teeth and gums; berry mint)
PowerSmile (With three natural whiteners; peppermint flavor)
NutriSmile (Contains Ester-C and fights bacteria; orange, cinnamon and mint flavor)
Sea Fresh (Contains algae, sea salt and minerals; spearmint flavor)

I tried this as well and was impressed. But, use sparingly-a little goes a long way.My only concern about the product is-why does it have fluoride in it. that's supposed to be a no no in the organic world. But, other than that I love the product and the results from it.

I bought some Jason Sea Algae toothpaste and was pleased with the taste and the fact that it didn't foam (probably no SLS). However, I wonder why they refer you to poison control if a child ingests it. What else is in there besides mint and algae??? They sure don't tell you on the label.

Jason is not very "natural" as a rule. Many of their products (shampoos, soaps, toothpastes, rinses etc.) contain sodium lauryl sulfate which is a toxic agent. I believe the toothpaste you are using might have it.

I tried the SeaFresh variety. It doesn't leave an overly powerful minty taste in your mouth like conventional toothpastes, but after you use naturals for a while just try going back to Colgate or whatever.. that mint will make you gag. I found that the SeaFresh does a really good job and I don't have plaque or bad breath. The only complaint I have is that it can clump in my toothbrush where conventional toothpaste rinses out. I banged the toohbrush against the sink and it came clean just fine.
