The noise was coming from the direction of the bathroom that adjoined his human's bedroom, so he crept in that direction, listening all the while. The scent was not unfamiliar to him, but he knew his human would not be happy to find this kind of visitor in her home.
Suddenly, Jaxon realized that there were several source of the sound and scent. There appeared to be a family of the creatures. As his human slept, Jaxon quietly and thoroughly hunted the intruders. If any of them survived, they were wise enough to leave.
When Jaxon's human arose the next morning, she found Jaxon's offering in her bathroom floor. Conquering the impulse to shriek and run, she praised him lavishly and rid the house of the remains. She was impressed and proud of her dearest friend and companion.
Since the intruding creatures were possible carriers of diseases, Jaxon's human took him to the vet to get shots, for his safety. He was not happy about that, but his human repaid his good behavior with treats and affection. It was vital to the human to reduce the risks to her pal.
Unfortunately, Jaxon soon started feeling unwell. He began to behave in an uncharacteristic manner. His appetite diminished, and he was quite cranky. After a few days, his human noticed that he was wearing a beard of foamy drool around his mouth. For all his heroic efforts, poor Jaxon had contracted rabies.
Jaxon's human was heartbroken. There could never be a friend and companion such as this dog. It seemed so unfair that the kindest thing she could do was make certain he died as quickly and painlessly as possible. However, this terrific dog would never cease to be a hero in his human's heart. In that way, he will live forever.
