Jay Leno Show Cancelled? Will the Jay Leno Show Be a One and Done?

Chris Houston
Has NBC already decided The Jay Leno Show will be cancelled? Is the Jay Leno Show a one and done and will it make it's run for the entire season?

After a fast start in week one, the ratings have certainly dropped for The Jay Leno Show. Critics believed the idea when first announced would never last. The Jay Leno Show is still on the air but there have been rumblings on the internet and bloggers calling for The Jay Leno Show to be cancelled. NBC has not released any information detailing the possible cancellation of the show that airs every Monday through Friday from 9pmto 10pm CST.
What has happened? Cop Land, a drama that was a little too dark for the 8pm CST hour, was cancelled and will now move to TBS. So The Jay Leno show has not been cancelled and it looks as if it will run it's course for 2009.

If NBC plans on sticking with The Jay Leno Show then they'll certainly have to figure out a way to draw ratings so local affiliates aren't getting killed heading into their late local newscast. The Jay Leno Show is not a good opening act for the local news on NBC affiliates across the country and some stations have toyed with the idea of running something in it's place.

Should The Jay Leno Show be cancelled? The writing is certainly on the wall and for The Jay Leno Show to make an entire season is certainly a win for a program that has struggled during that hour. Perhaps The Jay Leno Show could move to another network once cancelled but it doesn't seem to be meshing with the 9pm CST hour for NBC. NBC has certainly dropped programs with better ratings quicker than you can say "Trauma".

So for The Jay Leno Show, being cancelled is not out of the question. The problem for NBC is they would have to come up with 5 nights of programming to fill the void left if they decided to cancel The Jay Leno Show. It's not one of those things where they can throw in a re-run of Deal Or No Deal for one night. We are talking about 5 hours of programming during a prime time hour that is very crucial. That could be the biggest reason that The Jay Leno show won't be cancelled before it runs it's course this season. As for next year, if The Jay Leno show isn't cancelled it would be called a minor miracle. Maybe if NBC sticks with it for a long period of time the show will develop a following. NBC could also weigh the option of putting Leno back on following the late local news and moving Conan back to his original slot. It doesn't seem to be a question of if The Jay Leno show will be cancelled, it looks as if it's a matter of when The Jay Leno Show will be cancelled.
