Jazzing Up Your Christmas Tree: Theme Decorating Ideas

Lyn McCallister
Each year you decorate your Christmas tree with the same box of mismatched and outdated boring ornaments. You're ready to change it up and bring some pizzazz to your Christmas decorations!! How do you achieve this Christmas decorating miracle? Use a tree decorating theme where all the elements have something in common.

What is a Christmas tree decorating theme?

Start by writing down what you most enjoy about the holiday. Is it the religious aspect? Is it the family gathering time? Is it the weather? Is it cute polar bears wearing Santa hats?

Write down your favorite holiday color or color combinations.

Now, look at your list. What jumps out at you? Take that idea and turn it into your Christmas tree theme.

In my family, we have a tree decorated only with Santa Claus themed ornaments. Every ornament has something to do with Santa whether it is the jolly elf himself, his boots, his hat, or even Mickey Mouse dressed as Santa. Paired with sparkling clear tree lights, the end result is a spectacular and unique tree that never fails to get praised by visitors.

Christmas Tree Theme Ideas

Visit your local garden shop, craft shop, or even an interior decorating shop to view professionally decorated trees for ideas.

Some great ideas include:

1. Santa Theme

2. Snowman Theme

3. Penguin and/or Polar Bear Theme

4. Dogs and Cats Theme

5. Single Color Theme - all ornaments are the same color but can be any shape or design

6. Two Color Theme - such as blue and silver or red and gold

7. Angel Theme

8. Religious Theme

9. Sports Theme

10. Food, Cookies, or Candy Theme - think candy canes and sugarplums!

11. Coffee Theme

12. Rustic/Outdoor Theme

Once you have chosen your theme, the real fun begins: shopping! Decide if you want just ornaments and lights or if you also want to add tinsel or other decorations. In addition, your theme will change depending on if you have a natural green tree or a flocked tree. Make these decisions ahead of time, if possible.

Many stores start to stock up on Christmas ornaments and decorations beginning in October. Start looking to purchase themed ornaments early so the spending is easier on your pocketbook. In addition, shop after-Christmas sales for really outstanding deals on decorating items.

You may want to let friends and family know that you are going to have a themed tree and ask them to be on the lookout for unique ornaments that support your theme. You may find that your themed-tree takes several years to become complete as you'll keep adding ornaments to your collection.

You can shop local stores, holiday bazaars, and even Ebay to find just the right ornaments and decorations for your themed Christmas tree. Look for Christmas tree skirts, stockings, and other items to complete the look.

Engage your spouse and children when it comes time to decorate the themed tree. Enjoy the sparkle and wonder in your children's' eyes as they gaze upon your beautifully decorated tree!
