She also opened the XV Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, Alberta.

Favourite functions

You may remember from previous articles that Jeanne Sauve was dedicated to promoting youth and tackling youth issues in her days as member of parliament under the Trudeau government. Therefore, one of her favourite functions was hosting the annual Christmas Party for the Ottawa Boys and Girls club and the french counterpart, Patro d'Ottawa. The children were invited to Rideau Hall, home of the Governor General of Canada, to see Santa, have a fabulous lunch, and get to see the Right Honorable Jeanne Sauve wearing a paper party hat.

What goes around comes around

In a previous article we talked about how there were rumours that Sauve felt that Brian Mulroney was elevating his position of Prime Minister to more than it actually was. It so happens that Mulroney accused her of the same. "She was criticized for her own presidentialization of the viceregal post, with pundits at the time saying she occupied "Republican Hall" She meddled in dinner plans prepared by Frederick Johnson, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan ,which he was hosting Government House. Her official position was simply to be a guest.

Municipal organizations also had qualms with her when they were told they were not allowed to sing the Royal Anthem at their events and they had to make the Royal toast to the governor general and not the Queen.
