Jeans and Boots: Three Ways to Tuck Them In

One Fast and Two Stylish

I grew up in a culture where jeans were seldom tucked into boots. Un-tucked jeans meant riding horses and doing cool cowboy things. However, I grew up, got practical, and discovered several ways to tuck my jeans into boots.

The Quick Utility Jeans Tuck will keep flared or boot-fit jeans out of horse poop while you muck stables or keep them out of puddles as you wade to the office in wellies. This is easier to do for boots with zippers or laces than for pull-on boots.

1 - Pinch the hem at your ankle. The pinched material should be at the inside ankle bone.
2 - Wrap the pleat snugly to the outside of your ankle and hold the fold in place.
3 - Slide the boot on.

Military personnel often do this fold in reverse:

1 - Pinch the pants snugly at your heel.
2 - Wrap the pleat to the front, on the inside ankle.
3 - Put the boots on.

The Military Bloused Tuck creates a pouf of fabric just above the top of ankle-high boots. This looks best with loose-fitting straight-legged jeans. How do the Marines do it? Two words: blousing garters. The elastic and velcro ones work best because they are adjustable.

1 - Put on your jeans.
2 - Pull the hem up.
3 - Put the garter around the hem at the level of the boot top or just below it.
4 - Distribute the fabric evenly under the garter.
5 - Put on the boots.
6 - Pull the pant leg down so it folds over the top of the boot.

The Cossack Tuck creates a pouf of fabric around the top of knee-high boots. Cossacks wore full trousers that were gathered into a band that easily tucked into the boot top. If you wear this style often, consider shortening a pair of loose-fitting jeans and gathering them onto a cuff or elastic band.

For a temporary Cossack Tuck, combine the Utility and the Military tucks:
1- Blouse the jeans just below your boot tops with a blousing garter.
2 - Make a utility tuck for the excess fabric and secure it with a safety pin.
3 - Put your boots on.
