Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Mo'Nique and Christoph Waltz Win Big at the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards

On the Heels of Their 2010 Golden Globe Wins, These Four Performers Now Lead the Race to the Oscars

Steven Bryan
After a week of torrential rains and mudslides in Southern California, Hollywood's best and brightest came back outside Saturday, January 23, 2010 for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. As members of the Screen Actors Guild gathered at the Shrine Auditorium and Exposition Hall, however, there was a distant sound of thunder from a potential strike in Hollywood.

Numerous 2010 Golden Globe winners also win the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Award

It was a very busy week for Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique, four of the big winners at the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. On Sunday, January 17, each of these performers also took home a 2010 Golden Globe Award. These repeat performances practically guarantee that their names will be read on Tuesday, February 2, the time when the Oscar nominations are announced.

On the small screen side of things, Jane Lynch and the cast of "Glee" also made a second trip to the podium in a week, earning the Actor for "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series," sending a message to NBC's powerhouse "30 Rock" that there is a new kid on the block. "We couldn't be happier to be acting on this show," Lynch said as she was surrounding by the ensemble cast of "Glee."

"30 Rock" had nothing to complain about, though, with wins for both Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. With a not-so-subtle hint about another potential strike in Hollywood, Baldwin did mention that "another negotiation is coming up around the corner." Fey was a bit more optimistic, giving a shout out to NBC, home to "30 Rock," "We are happy to be there. We are happy with everything," Fey said, with tongue firmly in cheek about the Jay Leno fiasco.

If there was an award for most embarrassing presentation, however, it would go to Felicity Huffman, who was tongue-tied during her time on the 2010 Golden Globes last weekend. Saying she couldn't see because she didn't have her glasses on, Huffman relied on co-presenter Alec Baldwin to read her lines as well as his on the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Julianna Margulies and Michael C. Hall also do Golden Globe/Screen Actors Guild Award double-duty

It was a great week for Julianna Margulies, the star of the freshman series "The Good Wife." On the heels of a well-deserved 2010 Golden Globe win for the show, the Screen Actors Guild gave Margulies the Actor for "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series." "It's such an honor. I wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for my brilliant writers. You get better and better with every episode," she said during her acceptance speech. Margulies also thanked her parents for their support on many of her projects, except for the cult hit "Snakes on a Plane." They weren't so proud of that one," Margulies said, laughing.

Michael C. Hall also was all smiles, winning an Actor on top of his Golden Globe for "Dexter." Hall thanked many people for his success, especially his mother. "Thanks to my mom for keeping the most important doors open to me," Hall said, accepting the Actor for "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series."

"We're all in this together."

Ken Howard, President of the Screen Actors Guild, made a mid-show appearance to talk about the importance of SAG, especially for young actors starting out. "No one starts at the top. The Screen Actors Guild exists to protect those who want to take the journey," Howard said. After thanking members of the Directors Guild and other labor unions, Howard gave another indication that the Hollywood community is nervous about a potential strike. "We're all in this together," he said.

Betty White and Sandra Bullock trade barbs during the "Life Achievement Award" segment

Introducing Betty White, the winner of the "Screen Actors Guild Awards 46th Annual Life Achievement Award," actress Sandra Bullock called Betty White "annoying." "You make me feel bad about myself," Bullock said. "You make me feel like a slacker." When White had a chance to reach the stage, she responded in kind. "Isn't it heartening to see how far a girl as plain as she is can go?" White said, commenting on Sandra Bullock's extraordinary achievements in 2009.

White, who always is funny and outspoken, talked about her career. "You can't get rid of me. I was only 88 last Sunday, so I have a lot more stuff to do." White also talked about her passions, including her decade's long crusade for animal rights. "I may have more than two passions-but that's none of your business."
