Following the return of most members of the DWTS season 11 cast, performances by singer Christina Aguilera, and a final two-round showdown that challenged finalists Jennifer Grey, Kyle Massey and Bristol Palin to offer up even more fancy footwork for the judges to review, Dirty Dancing diva Jennifer Grey and partner Derek Hough walked away with the coveted Mirrorball Trophy and a spot in Dancing with the Stars history. Here's a peek at some of the night's best (and worst) action.
The first round of the two-part showdown that helped to determine who won Dancing with the Stars 2010 featured the finalists as they reprised their favorite dances of the season. All three made excellent choices that benefited them in the end. Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas and Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer each selected their Tangos, while Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough opted to go with their week one dance, the Waltz that reduced the actress to tears. They were scored via a ranking system, with each judge awarding one 8, one 9 and one 10 at their discretion. When it all shook down, Jennifer and Derek came out on top with all three 10s, Kyle and Lacey wound up in second with two 9s and an 8, and Bristol and Mark brought up the rear with two 8s and a 9.
With round one in the books, co-host Brooke Burke revealed that the sextet would be dancing their instant cha cha to Pink's Raise Your Glass, and the order of performance was randomly assigned as Kyle drew number one, Jennifer number two, and Bristol number three.
Dancing with the Stars finale shows of the past featured the return of celebrity cast-offs, and the season 11 send-off didn't break from tradition. While the finalists practiced their instant cha cha routines, the eliminated folks got to work on keeping us entertained. Actor David 'The Hoff' Hasselhoff, the first contestant to get the boot, was the first to offer up an encore. Donning lifeguard gear and surrounded by DWTS pros disguised as Baywatch-esque lifeguards, The Hoff sang and danced his way around the ballroom floor in unabashedly cheesy -- but also decidedly lovable -- style. The cheesepuff level of the routine was equalled by that of just one other cast member: Jersery Shore star Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino. The swagger-ific reality dude, partner Karina Smirnoff and two other lovely ladies joined him on-stage for an I'm Too Sexy striptease of a performance that left me admiring his abs, but giggling at his less-than-stellar moves.
Slightly less corny were returning Dancing with the Stars 2010 celebs Margaret Cho and Florence Henderson, whose Copacabana duet with partners Louis van Amstel and Corky Ballas was cute, fun, and filled with rainbows and bananas, cleverly disgused as the comedienne and the Brady Bunch star. And because you know there has to be a macho man showdown between pro athletes, Kurt Warner and Rick Fox took each other on in an Eye of the Tiger flavored Paso that featured a chest-bump and what appeared to be lots of attempts to maintain composure.
A substantially more stone-faced R&B singer Brandy was the final cast-off to take to the ballroom floor for one last fling, as she and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy skipped the sillies in favor of reprising a Friends-inspired Quickstep that had earned high praise from the judging panel.
Filling in the cracks with musical performances was singer and Burlesque star Christina Aguilera, who offered up a theatrical version of Show Me How You Burlesque early on in the DWTS finale results show, followed later by a lovely rendition of her hit Beautiful. The singer seemed tired and a bit disheveled, fueling plenty of 'Christina Aguilera pregnant' web searches, according to Google Trends.
Christina's personal life aside, the cha cha challenge featured strong performances by each finalist and high praise from the judges. Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey tied with 28 points apiece, while Bristol Palin received a mark of 27 for her efforts. With the challenge in the rearview and the night's new scores added into the mix, it was time to reveal the DWTS winner.
Finishing in third place were Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas, who seemed disappointed, but also grateful to have made the finals in the first place. In second? Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer, who didn't get a chance to say much of anything as Dancing with the Stars 2010 winner Jennifer Grey and three-peat pro victor partner Derek Hough gleefully hoisted the Mirrorball Trophy above their heads and the season came to a close.
Am I surprised by the results? No. Am I pleased? Sure. With the exception of a few off weeks, Jennifer Grey was Dancing with the Stars 2010's front runner and deserved to take home the trophy. And she was my pre-season pick to take the title, and it always makes a girl feel good to be right.
With that, I'll sign off from another great season of Dancing with the Stars, but I'll remind you to check your local listings and keep an eye open for the start of the Spring edition. Or of course, you could just check in with me, because you know I'll be watching!
