Jennifer Hudson Performs on Good Morning America

Tina Molly Lang
American Idol singer and Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson appeared on Good Morning America to promote her upcoming album. During the Good Morning America segment, she discussed her experiences singing and acting. She confessed that acting made her more nervous because it was a new experience. She had been singing her whole life. Jennifer Hudson looked glamorous with a smooth pageboy haircut and shimmery form-fitting purple dress. Chris also complimented her on her lime-colored shoes. She then performed her upcoming single Spotlight. Jennifer Hudson's new self-titled album was produced by Clive Davis and will be released on September 30.

Jennifer Hudson: Background

Born in 1981, Jennifer Hudson is an ingénue on the rise. She rose to national recognition during her appearance on American Idol, where she gained support from artists such as Elton John and Barry Manilow. Jennifer Hudson finished seventh on American Idol, leading fans to believe that she had been "robbed." Voters blame the power outage in her native Chicago that night. For American Idol fans who question the usefulness of Randy and Paula, one should remember that Jennifer Hudson would not have even made the finals if Randy Jackson hadn't given her a wildcard.

After American Idol, Jennifer Hudson performed the role as Effie White in the movie Dream Girls, where she went on to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and BAFTA, and a SAG Award. Jennifer Hudson was the first American Idol contestant to win an Academy Award, showing that you don't have to win to be a winner on American Idol.

Jennifer Hudson: Other American Idols

During her season of American Idol, Jennifer Hudson was considered one of the "belters" (along with Fantasia, LaToya London, and Diana DeGarmo). Jennifer Hudson was famous for her powerful vocals, full vibrato, and gospel quiver. On her Good Morning America segment, one could still hear the gospel quiver, but her matured and smoothed out around the edges. She will only improve as her career takes off.

It's possible that Jennifer Hudson's career could eclipse Fantasia and LaToya. While Fantasia's style is energetic and unique, her gravelly voice is one you either love or hate. Fantasia's Macy Gray voice is an acquired taste. And while LaToya London was overall the strongest technical singer of her season, audiences felt she lacked the personality and spark of Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer Hudson is the best of both worlds, bringing a powerful voice with a unique personality. As pointed out in the interview with Good Morning America, singer and actress Jennifer Hudson can do it all.
