Jennifer Hudson Self Titled Debut Sneak-Peek Review

Does the Dreamgirl Deliver?

A few years ago, Jennifer Hudson was best known for her stint as a contestant on the omnipresent American Idol. That all changed after her career changing roles in Dreamgirls and Sex & The City. Now the Academy Award winning actress returns to her first love in music with her self titled album. Will Jennifer be able to conquer the pop charts the way she conquered the box office?

The first single off of Jennifer Hudson is the Ne-Yo written and StarGate produced Spotlight. The song is pretty much the typical StarGate and Ne-Yo affair. The song is fairly solid and a strong way to introduce Jennifer to the audience as a contemporary R&B artist.

The second single is the Timbaland produced Pocketbook. The track features rapper Ludacris. The song is one of the catchiest and commercially viable tracks on the album. The song features a minimalist beat box heavy beat and a strong verse from Ludacris.

What's Wrong (Go Away) features and is produced by T-Pain. The song is a departure from what you expect from T-Pain songs. Although the Autotune is still prevalent, the song is much more soulful.

I'm His Only Woman is a sultry duet with American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. The song pits two of the biggest screamers in the whole music industry together on one track. The song is basically a female Same Girl which pitted Usher and R. Kelly together.

Invisible is a strong ballad written and produced by Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. The song builds solidly into the chorus and is just another solid track.

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going is from Jennifer's stirring Academy Award winning turn in Dreamgirls. The song is strong vocally and melodically like the original Stephanie Mills version; Jennifer proves she can actually sing unlike most of the mainstream artists.

My Heart is one of the few up-tempo tracks on the album. The song is a welcome change from all of the ballads.

Jesus Promised Me A Home Over There is the gospel track on the album. The song will definitely transform Jennifer to the non-secular marketplace.

Jennifer Hudson is a mix and match album. There are several strong tracks; however the effort lacks cohesion from trying to be everything to everyone. Overall Jennifer Hudson gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Jennifer Hudson make sure you pick up her self titled album JenniferHudson when it is available in stores on September 30th.
