Jeno's Steaks Sells Philly Cheesesteak in Severna Park, Maryland Institution: The Neighborhood Sub Shop is Alive and Well

When you first walk into Jeno's Steaks in Severna Park, Maryland you find the walls covered with photos of locals that have submitted their photos of them enjoying the cheesesteak subs and other items from Jeno's Steaks. Jeno's is not a chain trying to blend into the neighborhood, they are a neighborhood sub shop. This is clear with all the photos of different sports teams enjoying their subs from local little league teams to members of area high schools. By the way, most of the employees are high school students and they take great pride in their work and do it well.
On a recent Friday night I entered to be greeted by a bubbly (and I mean that in a nice way) cashier who offered me a menu to look at. There were three fellow employees behind the counter handling the grill. They were joking with each other and with the customers waiting in line. Each time an order was ready they announced it and made a little bit of small talk with the customer asking them if there was anything else they needed.
The list of cheesesteaks is substantial without being overwhelming. The usual suspects are on the list including traditional cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, and pizza cheesesteaks. I decided on the Jeno's special which comes with steak, mushrooms, hot peppers, and cheddar cheese. The cashier said it would be no problem to switch the cheddar for mozzarella for me. I also ordered a cheeseburger sub for my wife with no toppings. The gentleman at the grill even asked me if I was sure there was nothing I wanted on it, as they were willing to add any topping to it that they would normally put on other subs. I told him it was fine and that was how she liked hers. He happily made our subs.
My wife was very happy with her plain cheeseburger sub and the "boardwalk style fries" that I ordered. I enjoyed the fries as well. She was jealous though when she saw my cheesesteak. It was loaded with meat. The sub rolls are about seven or eight inches, but they are opened to their limites to be filled with the steak. The rolls are average, but the meat and toppings were great. Too often supposed cheesesteak restaurants give you a cheesesteak with a small portion of pre weighed meat. This is not the case at Jeno's Steaks, they load it on. I will definitely be returning to Jeno's Steaks in the near future in Severna Park.
Now, I just have to decide which of these two mouth watering subs I'll order if I can handle them. The "Eighth Wonder" which has rib eye steak, provolone cheese, fried onions, bacon and buffalo sauce with bleu cheese; or the Man Sub which is loaded with rib eye, marinated steak, bacon, and cheddar cheese. Might just have to go back twice to try both at Jeno's Steaks. The food and the service has won me over.
