The senator after initial hesitation has stated that he does not agree with his minister's statements and that these statements in no way reflect his opinions and that he vehemently disagrees with Reverend Wright's attack on the United States and white people in general.
Fair enough.
Certainly, the senator can not be held responsible for his minister's racially divisive and insensitive remarks. There is no and should be no guilt by association in this instance. The senator can not be held responsible for the remarks of a bitter aging pastor who has obviously been scared by his life experience as a black man in what he would call a 'white man's world'. Forgiveness and reconciliation, subjects so frequently taught in the bible must be found in chapters the Reverend Wright failed to read....
While Senator Obama should not be held responsible for Rev. Wright's racist remarks from the pulpit many question why an intelligent, educated, and successful young man such as Senator Obama would attend services for twenty + years and not take exception to these nonsensical remarks which flowed from the pulpit on Sunday.
The Senator has explained that during his twenty years of attending services in which Reverend Wright preached he never once heard any remarks similar to those which have come to light on video tape.
It is the above statement by Senator Obama for which he does have to take responsibility.
If the American public is to believe this statement one of two situations had to have occurred. The senator would have us believe that Reverend Wright's explosive racist and unpatriotic remarks rarely occurred (a few of which were captured on video tape) or that these remarks only took place when Obama was not in attendance.
Anyone who has seen The Reverend Wright on these videos can easily see that his tirades expressing racial hatred and disgust for his nation is dominant in his life and in his character. It is no one time emotion or one random outburst. These feelings come from years of racial hatred and distrust for which his elevation to the pulpit have provided an outlet and without any doubt surface in every sermon Wright preaches.
The Senator would have us believe he never once in twenty years (1,040 sermons) heard such a sermon.
It appears that the senator is being less than honest with the American public....and as one who stands for the fresh new, voice of change and reason (and honesty) Senator Obama can and should do better than that.
In defense of Reverend Wright (and perhaps of Senator Obama) Trinity United Church of Christ (the Senator's and Wright's church) has issued a statement claiming that the media and politicians have launched an unfair attack on the Reverend Wright and the church. A long statement issued by the church in defense of Wright includes the following:
"The Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.'s character is being assassinated in the public sphere because he has preached a social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe."
With all due respect to church, the Reverend Wright is not be assassinated, but is being justifiably criticized for making idiotic and dogmatic statements claiming white people had "invented' and 'injected' black people with the aids virus, that this nation had waged genocide against black South Africans, and that Blacks should not ever say 'God Bless America', but should sing 'God Damn America', among many, many other nonsensical ramblings.
Perhaps his church considers spewing such garbage as ''preaching social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe.", but most Americans do not.
The only responsibility Senator Obama has here is to be honest and straight forward and admit he sat in the congregation, heard and obviously tolerated the vile message delivered by his pastor.
That's All.
By now Senator Obama should realize that dodging and weaving to avoid an issue does not work.....Honesty does.

Post a CommentI see what Obama said is possible, in that Wright got into a shared spotlight with Obama that didn't exist before and therefore may have chosen to speak differently than in the past.
