Jessic Simpson's Attempt to Cross Over to Country Music Not Well Received
Former Pop-music Star Roundly Booed
Whether her poor reception was the result of her appearance in skin tight shorts and cowboy boots or her choice of songs or her reputation as a pop music star is unclear, but for whatever reason the country music fans found it difficult to accept her as "one of their own".
It did not help that in front of a relatively hostile audience Jessica chose to sing two songs which were previous hits by much revered country legends. These included Willie Nelson's "On the road again" and Shania Twain's, "Whose bed have your boots been under?"
Fans seemed to resent Jessica's attempt to sing these songs in her pop-style. As one fan put it, "I just don't hear country in her...where's the twang? She's not good enough to be here".
Another fan offered another assessment of her attempt to win them over by singing "On the road again". "It's not the words or the melody we like when in this song. It's the way Willie sings it, with his nasal twang and soulful rendition. Jessica just doesn't get that. She is not Willie and she is not Shania".
Another fan suggested that this performance showed that her heart was not in it (country music) and that she was just trend hopping. "She is an embarrassment to country music", he said.
In reaction to fan reaction Jessica attempted to defend herself speaking directly to the audience saying. "I don't know what your perception of Jessica Simpson is or what tabloid you read but, but I want you to know that I'm just a girl from Texas. I'm just like you. I'm doing what I love and dating a boy". The reference to "dating a boy" addressed her much reported relationship with the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, Tony Romo, who is a Wisconsin native.
Fans didn't buy the little girl from Texas who is "just like you". As indicated by one angry fan that said, "Just dating Tony Romo doesn't make her country. She doesn't fit in with country. I'll have to drink a lot of beer to sit through her concert".
Critics in attendance were surprised at the fan reaction. Simpson had previously produced a single entitled "Come on over" which was a large hit in Nashville.
Jessica promised the audience that she would win them over and vowed never to record another pop album.
The future will tell how well country music fans will accept this and Jessica.
