Jesus Cheeto or Pareidolia?

Cheesus; Finding Jesus in Food and Other Sightings

Donna Porter
Not "geez" but "cheesus," a so-called Jesus Cheeto has been witnessed by a Missouri resident, Kelly Ramey, as reported by MyFoxStLouis.com

Slow news day perhaps, and competing for attention with a 44-pound cat named Princes Chunk, the Jesus Cheeto, nicknamed Cheesus, broadens the meaning of the biblical advice,"seek and you shall find."

The cheezy photo and video can found on the Fox News affiliate website. Not all agree that the crunchy religious icon is a heavenly inspired Jesus Cheeto -- to include a family member who likens the resemblance to a horse's head.

Yet, given spiritual authority is a matter of faith, who can argue effectively with people who find Jesus in a Cheeto or a pancake. Albeit, some Christians and Atheists may concur that the savior of the Christian world would more likely grace a snack food than he would a televangelist.

Jesus Cheeto or Pareidolia?

Pareidolia is "the tendency for the human psyche to construct familiar images from vague, coincidental but random patterns.'" Examples of the phenomenon and some religious parody by Trey Parker and Penn and Teller will sure to offend true believers of religious icons at yoism.org. Is pareidolia the reason for finding a Jesus Cheeto? Take a look at the Cheesus photo for an answer.

Cheesus! more places to find Jesus (and the Virgin Mary)

Ibiblio.org touches on largely pre-internet news of subjective Jesus sightings, from a Pizza Hut billboard to Oral Roberts' discovery of a 900 ft. Jesus next to the evangelist's university.

Jesus in a Flapjack: Made with Great Value pancake mix (Jesus blesses Wal-mart?), a Port St. Lucie woman finds an iconic Jesus and Mary while her mother maintains it is Santa Claus. Bids on eBay for the Jesus pancake exceeded $300 but finalized at under $30.

Jesus on Toast Video: A well defined image of Jesus on a piece of toast, which generated some initial eBay excitement, was outbid by a copycat, Obama on Toast. Both pieces of leavened bread were removed from the auction site -- doesn't the bible mention something about false imagery?

Is the Jesus Cheeto Real?
To be clear, hoaxes and scam artists aside, I won't begrudge anyone as to where and how they find their higher power. Personally, I find Jesus in rainbows and other beautiful creations as well as [on a good day] in a person's heart. As far as a Cheesus or Jesus Cheeto ...I don't have the restraint to analyze the forbidden snack food.

I have to agree with the family member... I don't see Jesus.. I see what looks kind of like a cross, but it looks more like a horse head to me. Great writing!

In my 41 years of life, I have found that people wil see what they want to see. I am an abstract artist. I have seen some fascinating things in my artwork. Oddly enough, I just returned from a San Francisco, CA vacation and saw a skull form in dried bird droppings on a deck. My photog hubbie snapped it and EVERYONE who saw it SWORE it was a skull. I guess there is a wealth to see out there, espeically if we are creative and recpetive to it. This was a well writen piece. I am glad that I read it. Thank you! (I tired repeatedly to give you five stars but the ratings system is not working -- at least for me.)

Excellent article! Now, if I could just find the winning lottery numbers on a Dorito, I'd have it made!

The things people are able to sell on eBay is to much, and like J.P. I have the devil in a grain of wood in the kitchen. It is now painted over, but the head and horns are still there underneath.
