Jesus Christ is Yahweh

Various Proofs Arguing for the Deity of Christ

Jared Moore
First, the Angel of the Lord, in the Old Testament, was a preincarnate appearance of Jesus Christ. Second, both Psalm 2 and Acts 13:33 point to the Universal dominion of Christ. Third, Psalm 45, Hebrews 1:8,9 emphasize the eternal throne of Christ. Fourth, the Prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 9:6 point to Him as the mighty God, everlasting Father. Fifth, the Prophet Micah in Micah 5:2 prophesied concerning the One who is born in Bethlehem. This One who would be born is the One whose going forth has been from everlasting. Sixth, Malachi 3:12 and Mark 1:2 prophesy concerning this One who will come to His temple. Finally, Jesus is referred to as Yahweh in Matthew 3:3, Isaiah 40:3, John 12:41, Isaiah 6:1, I Peter 3:14, Isaiah 8:13, Ephesians 4:7,8, Psalms 68:18, Hebrews 1:6, 27, Psalms 97:7, Hebrews 1:10-12, and Psalms 102:25-27. The Biblical evidence therefore concerning the divinity of Jesus with just this cursory glance is astounding; and this is only a small amout of the information. There is more to follow.

Divine Titles in the New Testament are ascribed to Christ. Jesus is called God in John 1:1. He is called Lord and God in John 20:28. The Apostle Paul in Romans 9:5 says that jesus is God over all. Again, in Titus 2:13, Paul calls Him God and Savior. In 1 John 5:20 He is referred to as the Son of God. Jesus Himself as detailed in John 8:58 says that He is "I AM". Jesus here is identifying Himself here clearly as the God of the Old Testament. His audience quickly responded by picking up stones to kill Him.

Divine Perfections are also ascribed to Jesus in the New Testament. Jesus is ascribed eternity in John 8:58, Revelation 1:8,17, and 22:13. Immutability is ascribed to Him in Hebrews 13:8 and Hebrews 1:11,12. Omnipresent is ascribed to Him in John 3:13 and Matthew 28:20. Omniscience is ascribed to Jesus in Matthew 11:27 and Revelation 2:23. Finally, omnipotence is ascribed to Jesus in John 5:17, Hebrews 1:3, and Revelation 11:17.

Divine works are also ascribed to Jesus. In John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16,17 Jesus is the creator. Jesus is given responsibility for the preservation of all things in Hebrews 1:3 and Colossians 1:17. In Matthew 28:18 He is in control of providence. Jesus performs miracles in John 5:21, 36. He will execute judgment in the last days according to 2 Corinthians 5:10 and Matthew 25:31,32. He performs the function of electing His people in John 13:18. He is responsible for sanctification in Ephesians 5:26. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit in John 10:28. He is the Life-giving One according to John 10:28.

Worship is ascribed to Christ. We are told that all who are "saints" call on Jesus' name in I Corinthians 1:2. In 2 Corinthians 13:14 His name is envoked in blessing. In Philippians 2:10,11 and Revelation 7:10 we are to adore and prostrate ourselves before Him. Jesus receives praise and glory in Revelation 1:5-6.

Finally, the Work of Christ is divine work. Activities of a divine being are ascribed to Christ throughout the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament. Without His deity, these activities would have had no significance.
