Another article published by K.B Napier "Jesus and Gays", has drawn a lot of comments from Associated Content writers and readers. In an attempt to justify his beliefs, K.B. Napier quotes scriptures from the Bible, calling it "facts", to support a theory that homosexuality and promiscuity has led to STD's, AIDS, divorce and other social problems. He then goes on to say homosexual couples' love could never be equivalent to heterosexual love. However, the basis of K. B. Napier's argument, the Bible, cannot be considered facts, as the Bible is incomplete. Furthermore, K.B. Napier's beliefs cannot be proven factual because they are just that, beliefs.
Pope Damasus I assembled the first Bible from which many translations and publications have been made available, in 382 A.D. Pope Damasus I chose the content and books
which would be included in the Bible. He then commissioned Saint Jerome to translate the books chosen to be interpreted from Hebrew and Greek into a consistent Latin book. Many of the books written about Christ's life were not included in the Bible. For example, the Gospel of Thomas speaks of Christ as a child building birds out of clay and bringing them to life which was considered "too magical" to be included in the bible. The Gospel of Thomas also includes a scripture Jesus said; I am the Light that is above them all. I am the All, the All came forth from me the All attained to me. Cleave (a piece of) wood, I am there; lift up the stone and you will find me there. Unfortunately, these and many other teachings of Christ were not "approved" to be included in the Bible.
The books chosen to be included in the bible were translated in a way that each book is consistent with the other books chosen. For example, the first four books of the New Testament, the Gospels, were written approximately forty to fifty years after Jesus's death. Even though the Gospels are given the names of some of Christ's disciples, the books were not actually written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The books were written based on stories and hearsay of the life of Christ and were possibly influenced by the growing dissent between Christianity and Judaism. These books are so similar many historians believe the books of Matthew and Luke are based on Mark and another source called "Q".
A book that is incomplete and written years after Christ's death cannot be a factual account of Christ's life. Many Christians accept the Bible, as is, inspired by the Holy Spirit and as a source of morality and standard of life. For some people, their belief in the Bible begins to turn belief to fact. Unfortunately, for people such as K.B. Napier a man who has made his "prerogative" to "loathe the lifestyle" of homosexuals, the idea to simply turn one's belief in the Bible to fact, is erroneous.
Belief, as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is "a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing." A belief that homosexuality or promiscuity is the cause of divorce, social issues, and diseases is nothing more than a theory at best without facts. Fact, as defined by Merriam- Webster dictionary, is "the quality of being actual". Furthermore, to judge a person, or their lifestyle, simply on one's belief is not considered anything more than opinion, as a fact is actual.
K.B. Napier believes homosexual love can never be equivalent to heterosexual love because homosexuals cannot pre-create. Do heterosexual couples only love each other as much as other heterosexual couples if they have children? What about heterosexual couples who cannot have children, do they only love each other as much as homosexual couples and is this then considered a sin?
K.B. Napier goes as far to claim his critics are "ignorant" and lack intellectual capacity to understand his arguments, yet he fails to present facts to support his beliefs. K.B. Napier's beliefs, while controversial, are nothing more than his opinion. The Bible, written many years ago, is not complete and many of the teachings of Christ were written many years after Christ's death. It is impossible to give a factual account of Chirst's teachings. Thus, living according to the teachings of the Bible cannot be accepted as anything more than a belief. A belief, unless proven to be fact, is nothing more than an opinion.

Post a CommentTerrific piece, Liz. Thanks much for it.
Hi Liz. Many thanks for this article. It again proves my point, that certain groups (wasn't that circumspect?) are unable to apply critical analysis to facts. You appear to miss out a few facts. The arguments you raise are commonplace in popularist publications and are based on one particular stance, which has few adherents. Leaving the Bible aside, I challenge you with a simple fact (which you call 'opinion'). "ALL initial cases of AIDS in the UK, e.g. first five years, were amongst gays." Now prove it was opinion! And Jeff - continue to delude yourself. That's my only response to this. I won't be back, because I can't be bothered with pseudo-academia.
Thanks so much, Liz. Although Napier is too convinced of his own intelligence for this article to sway his opinion in the least, it's nice to see someone who has a brain write an article.
Great article. Kudos.
Thank you for pointing out that religious belief is an act of faith in unseen things, that by definition are not absolute. the neo-con christians see what the want to see in the bible, justifications for their own hopes and fears, and self-validation in self-righteousness.
