Jesus Loves Me, This I Know, for My Bunny Tells Me So

And Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

Ruth Cox aka abitosunshine
I parked my truck in front of the neighborhood market, stopping in to pick up a pack of cigarettes. Little did I know that on that day I would purchase something much more important than the item to feed my nicotine addiction.

A couple of stuffed animal Easter bunnies sat on the counter staring out at the convenience store customers. The owner of the store probably put them there to tempt the children of his patrons into pleading for their parents to make a last minute purchase for them for the upcoming holiday. I'd known the owner of the store for some time and felt he was a genuinely compassionate man, but the fact remains that he is in business to make money and I would guess he sold quite a few of those bunnies that year.

I chose to purchase the last two bunnies, one for myself and one to give to my cousin's daughter as a going away present. They were moving to another state and I felt this would be a perfect gift for her to have as a reminder of her "Aunt Ruthi." I don't know whether Brittany still has her bunny or not, but I'm happy to say that mine is still with me.

As I lay me down to sleep each night, I reach to the shelf on the headboard above me, a reach for comfort. I remove my bunny from her spot on the shelf and snuggle up with her on my pillow under my tattered comforter. I press upon my Easter Angel Bunny's faded red heart. Her quilted wings gently sway back and forth as she sings me her song. The words are of the love of the greatest comforter I've ever known, my Lord Jesus.

The words are a solace in times of sadness or of despair; the lyrics are jubilant in times of happiness or of fulfillment. A tune familiar to the masses, Christians and non-Christians alike may be heard singing or humming the lyrics of "Jesus Loves Me." Children, and adults as well, find promise in the song sung about a divine Comforter.

Come sing along with me and my bunny...

"Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

Chorus:
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
As He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee,
Saying, "Let them come to Me."

Chorus

Jesus loves me when I'm good,
When I do the things I should,
Jesus loves me when I'm bad,
Though it makes Him very sad.

Chorus

Jesus loves me still today,
Walking with me on my way,
Wanting as a friend to give
Light and love to all who live.

Chorus

Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

Chorus

Jesus loves me! Loves me still
Tho' I'm very weak and ill;
That I might from sin be free
Bled and died upon the tree.

Chorus

Jesus loves me! He will stay
Close beside me all the way;
Thou hast bled and died for me,
I will henceforth live for Thee.

Chorus:
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
My Bunny tells me so."

...and now I lay me down to sleep.

    Beautiful story. "Jesus Loves Me" was my oldest grandson's lullaby when he was a baby. There are verses here I did not know. I will have to remember them. Thank you.
