Jet Lag Tips for Business Travelers

Joyce Carole
I used to be a frequent traveler. I would travel almost monthly between my two homes, one in Pittsburgh, PA and the second in Oslo, Norway. The six hour time difference left me very often with jet lag. Many business travelers travel much more often than me and jet lag can take a toll on the business traveler. Staying active can help combat jet lag. Here are some tips for business travelers wishing to fit in fitness into their busy work schedule.

Find a gym in your destination city

Spend a few minutes researching hotels in your destination city before making your travel plans. Many hotels, especially chain hotels, have exercise facilities. If you are a business traveler who enjoys jogging on a treadmill or swimming a few laps in the pool, make sure the hotel you stay at can accommodate your exercise needs.

Think beyond the gym - Perhaps a yoga studio with a drop in class

Personally, I loathe treadmills. I find them excruciatingly boring. My favorite way to stay in shape when traveling is to find a local yoga studio that allows drop ins. I have done this in New York, Oslo (before I moved there), Chicago and Los Angeles. Big cities almost always have a wide variety of yoga studios. It is even possible for the business traveler traveling internationally to for example, Paris to locate a yoga studio offering a yoga class in English.

Fresh air is a great way to combat jet lag

Getting some fresh air is an excellent way to combat jet lag. Personally, when I was a business traveler, I enjoyed getting up early and jogging in my destination city. If you are a business traveler in New York City head to Central Park to walk or jog. Chicago? Chicago business travelers can jog the trail surrounding Lake Michigan. Washington D.C. is one of my favorite cities for jogging. As a business traveler in Washington D.C., I would head straight from my downtown hotel to the Washington Monument to jog. Bicycle rentals are also a way for the business traveler to get in some exercise while traveling.

Take advantage of long airport layovers

There is nothing worse than being stuck in the airport. One way for busy business travelers to make the most of their time spent waiting is to head to an airport gym or an airport hotel gym. A great resource for finding an airport gym is the website, www.airportgyms.com. This web site provides a listing of gyms located in or around major US and Canadian Airports.

These are some tips for the busy business traveler to use in order to pack in some exercise time while traveling. Remember exercise is one of the best remedies for jet lag.

I had no idea airports had gyms for use by the public/passengers. Also, after reading this and looking out the window here, I know it's break time - Taking a walk! Write on :-)

good tips Joyce! What you said is so true. I used to travel a lot to the far east and jet lag was my worst enemy, excercise is the best way to get back your focus in time for the next meeting.
