Jets RB Thomas Jones Says "Favre Should Have Been Benched"

Time to Go?

Tuesday of this week New York Jets running back Thomas Jones told a local radio station Hot 97 FM that future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre should have been benched at some point during the season. He went on to say that Favre's mistakes hurt the Jets down the 2008 season stretch.

First let's look at the facts. The Jets lost four of there last five 2008 games. During this 5 weeks Brett tossed nine interceptions with just two touchdowns. Favre finished the season with 22 touchdowns and a league-worst 22 interceptions; however the has-been Packers still somehow made the Pro Bowl.

Jones sacked his own quarterback and stated that Favre's 3 interceptions were a deciding factor in the 24 to 17 season-ending loss to the Miami Dolphins. Jones said "We're a team and we win together. ... But at the same time, you can't turn the ball over and expect to win," What makes the loss was especially excruciating is former Jet Chad Pennington outplayed Favre and led the Dolphins to clinch the AFC East.

"If I were to sit here and say, 'Oh, man, it's OK,' that's not reality. ... I don't like it, I know everybody else on the team doesn't like it. If somebody is not playing well, they need to come out of the game," Jones told Hot 97 FM. "You're jeopardizing the whole team because you're having a bad day. To me, that's not fair to everybody else. You're not the only one on the team. So when you get to the wire and somebody is just giving the game up, I mean, it's just not (fair)."

If you look back at my earlier 2008 article on Favre, I offer arguable proof that not only was ol' Brett NOT the best quarterback of all time, he is also damaging his legacy. There is a time to hang up the helmet, cap, skates and other equipment. There is a time to leave the field with dignity and poise. That time has passed for Favre.

Let's reflect on the choice of Favre to the Pro-Bowl with Brett's 2008 statistics:
• Rating - #9
• Completions - #3
• Attempts - #4
• Percentage - #4
• Yards - #7
• TD - #4
• Interceptions - LAST

These stats hardly scream Pro-Bowl.

So to wrap this us, his own players do not want him and clearly the Pro-Bowl election committee threw him a bone for spot on the team. Brett - please retire.
