Jevic Transportation Closes; Some Truckers Worry

Rosa Hayes
If you were to go to the Jevic Transportation Inc. website, you would be greeted by a short message telling its customers that they will be discontinuing operations. The cause of this is, as they stated, is due to the high fuel cost, economic downturn, increasing insurance cost, and tightening credit markets.

After my aunt's garbage pick-up service, known as Sisters and Brothers, went out of business she decided to go into the truck driving business. It was something that she figured would always be in business since most businesses are run by the delivery and pick-up that the trucks do for them.

My aunt started working for a trucking business during the truckers strike, but she thought that it would help her family to get back on their feet. Her husband often rides along for the ride and they have had a very good time with the business that she is working for.

I asked her a question that had been on my mind for a while. I asked her if the cost of fuel was affecting her at all. The reply that I got was something that I did not expect. The company that she works for not only pays her per mile but they also pay for her gas so that she is not out of pocket except for her food.

During my conversation with my aunt I did learn that a lot of the other truck drivers where quitting due to the high price of fuel, food, and other things that have risen in the past few months.

The company that she works for has had a big turn around due to a lot of truckers quiting and the high gas prices. The company has stated that they will continue to be in service but will be slowing down on how much the truck drivers will actually be out on the road. The companies that they often deliver too has come too switched to a closer company, raised their prices, or lowered how many weekly deliveries that they receive.

The cost in high fuel prices has not only affected the businesses for the truck drivers and their companies but it has also affected the little man who often owns these smaller companies. There has to be a rise in other cost such as food when it cost them more to have it delivered to their store.

Since my aunt has only been in the trucking business for only a couple of months I can't tell you much other than what some of the other truckers have told her. Some of the other truckers have said that the rise in fuel has really put a damper in the way things are ran now and it is even started to put companies out of business.

It isn't just the trucking companies like Jevic Inc. that are going out of business because of the high fuel cost but small food markets and clothing stores are also suffering.
