Jewel: Live Acoustic

Nicole (Amore) Dempsey
I went to Foxwoods Resort and Casino located in Connecticut this past weekend to see Jewel. This will mark the second occasion I was able to see her perform. And also the second time I have seen her acoustic. Jewel, a folk singer mostly, grabs the stage and audience with her outstanding vocals among other attributes.

Her opening act was Shane Alexander. He is an independent singer song writer, also in the folk genre. He started out quietly but eventually was comfortable enough to tell stories and joke a little. His performance was not long but very good. He definitely has talent. He currently has 2 albums out which are for sale on his myspace page (see references for the link).

Jewel came out shortly after her opening act left the stage. She walked immediately to the microphone, which was centered on stage between 2 guitars and in front of a small table supporting a huge bouquet of flowers and about 4 bottles of water, and started singing. Her first song was Somewhere over the rainbow, which showcased her voice beautifully.

I'm sure no one was disappointed with her show. Her set list included hits such as "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant For Me," and "Intuition." She played older songs mostly but then remembered about halfway through that she was there to promote her new album, Goodbye Alice In Wonderland. Her songs were sandwiched in between new and old humorous stories and comments from her and the crowd. It was a very personal show as far as any chart topper goes.

She, in my opinion, was much better this time around than the last time I saw her in Boston Massachusetts about 6 years ago. She played for about 2 hours overstepping onto the times Foxwoods had set up for her. And for her encore she came back out on the stage and graabbed the microphone off it's stand and belted out opera. Then she briefly touched her guitar and went back to singing with her last song of the night being a yodelling one. She has a fanatastic voice and she is even better live.

  • Shane Alexander, an up and coming folk singer opened for Jewel.
  • Jewel played, sang, and talked for 2 hours getting personal with her fans.
When Jewel was 20 she fulfilled a dream she had when she was 18 by opening up for Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan, who never watches nor meets his opening acts, watched her performance and asked her to meet him!
