Jewelry Design Ideas for Spring 2009

What's New for Spring Color

ANNE RUSH
The key trend for spring 2009 color is something you might call 'savvy color.'

Even though the economy is tough right now, major designers are not abandoning great color, they are simply being smart about color.

The trick is to ground new fashion jewelry color palettes with black or neutrals. This helps the customer understand how to wear the new color palettes, and at the same time it builds in longevity. Blacks and Neutrals allow the customer to see the value of the new piece as an addition to her wardrobe, rather than a trend item.

There are three color palettes that look fresh for Spring 2009 Fashion Jewelry.

Blush: This palette is whitened pastels in lavender, pink, bone, yellow and green. Pearlized plastics, iridescent beads, and soft washed out materials can work well here. I think the addition of satin ribbons, clear stones sewn onto pastel fabrics and leathers, and satin brushed metal finishes create the soft romantic look this palette represents.

Blush neutral base: Accenting these pastels with dark brown wood, brown tiger eye, opaque ivory, or copper platings will give this palette the ability to work with neutral fabrics in the customer's existing wardrobe.

Red,white, navy: this all American combination is perfect for today. It's classic, versatile, works well with denim, and crisp white blouses and t-shirts. What updates this story is adding a bit of glamor by accenting with clear crystal fireballs and touches of diamond cut silver metals. Mixing opaque and transparent color adds richness.

American neutral base: Navy and white are classic wardrobe colors, popping the red in makes this feel fresh.
Try working in woods that are stained in these colors for a more casual feeling, or go for a high gloss lacquered look in flat geometics with pave crystal circles for a more modern feeling. Keeping your silhouettes very simple will help this multi color story hang together properly.

Global and green: This palette should swing for a balance of color that has more neutral in the mix than bright colors. The idea here is to have a natural , tribal feeling and pop in bright colors. For example: mixing brown woods of various hues, and layering in khaki with emerald green. Or perhaps doing a mix of neutral shades and popping it with deep red coral. Black , brown, and bright yellow is another great combination.in this palette even the bright colors are inspired by nature.

Patterns and mixes of great shapes define this palette best. Look at African prints, batik patterns, and exotic skins for inspiration. Pierced and cut work metals plated in copper , pot black and oxidized silver are great all metal looks to work with the color pieces.

Right now whats working out there is definitely simplicity. Easy to wear beads and chains. Earrings that can go from day into night. Bracelets that stretch. So keep the looks versatile and pretty while keeping your colors feminine and happy and Spring 2009 fashion jewelry will certainly be a hit.
