Jewelry at a Discount

Janet Trieschman
Through online auctions of overstock items, Bidz.com offers online auctions of jewelry, art and collectibles. They start at only a dollar opening bid. Auctions continue until all bids are received. Bidz uses fragmented supply and excess products in a single online auction format.

While Bidz is great for the bargain shopper, it also shines as a resource for the resale market. Whether you want to sell items through eBay or a local auction site or retail venues, Bidz pricing is reasonable.

Bidz offers a variety of styles, gems and metals. With the starting retail price for a pair of sterling earrings that could retail for around 20 dollars to diamonds that retail for over 20,000. There is truly something for everyone remotely interested in jewelry.

Bidz was founded in 1998 in Culver City, California. Bidz is a public company with stock trading on the NASDAQ under the symbol BIDZ.

On the auction website, you can search by Features, Products, and Materials. I have used this function to select earrings and amethyst stones. The page views a variety of products typically four across eight rows deep. The page may show the comparative online price above the image with the current bid price below the image. This bid price flashes green when it changes to a new bid. Under the bid the website displays the screen name of the bidder and below that, the amount of time left on the auction. Each item displayed as a small image, scrolling over it with your mouse you get a larger view and if you click on it you can view more details about each item.

You have to register in order to bid. This process is easy and requires your basic contact information. You will receive an email notifying you of your approval. Once received you are welcome to bid online. Auctions need to be paid in full within ten days of a winning bid.

Delivery seemed quick. My package arrived via United States Postal Service but it required a signature. It took a few extra days to coordinate with our carrier and thus pick up at the local post office. But had I purchased a few thousand dollars worth of diamonds, I'd be glad for this added level of security.

If you are interested in discount jewelry but can't be bothered with the auction arena or fear the process you might want to take a look at their sister site, Buyz. Buyz features many similar items at a buy now price. My advise would be to check Buyz first before bidding on an item to make sure you don't go too close to the buy it now price.

I can attest to the fact that the auction site is addictive. I've made only one purchase which I am pleased with but I have been interested in many more pieces of jewelry that I just don't need but rather want. I would not classify myself as a jewelry-aholic, but rather a bargain-aholic! Happy bidding!
