Jewelry Pattern: Fringed Necklace

A Few Beads, a Little Time, and You'll Have a Beautiful New Necklace

Mary Gindling
Make this beautiful tailored necklace and start raking in the compliments. And your friends and co-workers will be surprised when you tell them you made it yourself. Make several in different colors to complement your wardrobe or to give as gifts. All you need is a few beads and findings, some simple, inexpensive tools, and a little time.

Size: Approx. 18 inches long including clasp

Materials

22-1/2 inches gold chain
22 - 10-mm beads (the model was made with beads salvaged from a broken vintage necklace)
23 - 5 mm gold jump rings
22 1-1/2" gold eye pins
1 gold hook-and-eye clasp

Tools:

1 pair miniature round nose pliers
1 pair miniature wire cutters

Notes:

Open jump rings sideways to avoid deforming the ring.
For extra safety, place a tiny drop of glue at the closures of eye pins and jump rings.

Assembly:

Step 1: (Make 22) Slide bead on eye pin, trim eye pin to 3/8 inch, form loop. (see Photo 2) Note: Be sure loops line up with one another. Twist loop if necessary. Set aside.

Step 2: Divide chain into fifteen 1-1/2" pieces.

Step 3: (Make 5) Slide one end of each of three chains on one jump ring. Close ring. (see Photo 3) Set aside.

Step 4: Beginning at one end of necklace, add jump ring to one loop of bead, close. Add jump ring to opposite bead loop, add another bead, close jump ring. (See Photo 4) Repeat seven times (total of 8 beads on chain). Add one more bead for a total of nine, but do not add jump ring.

Step 5: Open jump ring holding fringe, slide loose loop of 9th bead and one end of 10th bead, close jump ring. Repeat this step until all fringes are used. (See Photo 5)

Step 6: Add remaining beads as described in Step 4. Before closing last jump ring, add hook-and-eye clasp.

Another neat idea. I love home made jewelry, but I have a penchant for using stones I find.
