Jewish History Library: Holocaust Documentaries

Rachelle Lynn Williams
Everyone should watch these films in order to reflect upon what can happen when hatred and intolerance are allowed to prevail unchecked.

The events of the Jewish Holocaust should be well learned by all and nothing brings these horrific events to light better than moving pictures and sound. Put these documentary films in your Netflix queue and watch them with your children (12 and over):

Shoah (1985)

This film is a four disc series that serves as a documented testimony of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses. It is thoroughly. I saw Shoah as a teenager when it first aired on PBS, that was many moons ago and I have yet to forget this film. This is a must see.

Holocaust: Theresienstadt (2005)

The Nazi's used Theresienstadt as a model camp so that the world could view it at its leisure and be fooled about the true horrors and purpose of their concentration camps. This documentary sheds light on these events. * This film is actually one part of an entire series with historical footage from the Chronos film collection.

The Nazis: A Warning from History (1997)

This documentary focuses on the rise of the Third Reich. It features historical footage as well as interviews from survivors of the Nazi torture and killing machine. It also offers new information as well as interviews from Nazis who are completely devoid of remorse for the Holocaust.

Paragraph 175(2000)

This documentary focuses on the Nazi persecution of homosexuals. I chose this film because there are still people out there who have no idea that homosexuals were a target of the Nazis as well. The only drawback for some might be the fact that you must turn on the subtitles feature to fully understand the film as it is done entirely in German. This film is narrated by Rupert Everett.

These are just a few of the well made documentaries that have covered the Holocaust. Put these films in your Netflix queue and enjoy a vivid learning experience.

Both the actions of Stalin, Musolini and Hitler is indeed crimes that should never be forgotten.

They are stories how terribly wrong things can end up if we allow totalitatirian ideas to take control.

I also think that the US should take more consideration on their own history with the native americans, though.

And Europe should take more consideration about what happened in Bosnia/Serbia just sixteen years ago.

Just as much as I find it very concerning that Turkey officially denies the genocide on the armenians greeks and assyrians.

I remember back in the day I learned all this stuff in school and it seems you don't see it really being gone over these days like it should be. Really good informational links...nice job!

I find it distressing that our local schools do not teach about these events. How can we avoid repeats of them if they are not shown and discussed in a classroom.

Regarding your comment on "Paragraph 175," there is a fictional film on the same topic, "Bent," based on a play of the same title. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118698/ for more information. Another very moving documentary is "Black Fox: The True Story of Adolf Hitler" narrated by Marlene Dietrich, whose voice adds special poignancy. More at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055801.
