Jillian Michaels Insults Pregnancy, Motherhood

In a recent interview, "Biggest Loser" star and personal trainer Jillian Michaels insulted every mother in the world-- including many of her biggest fans. Michaels claimed that she wanted to adopt chlidren rather than give birth naturally, because she could never tolerate the damage that pregnancy would cause her body. Later, in the same interview, she trumpeted the notion that she is bisexual and has been in love with women. I assume that none of those women were mothers.

As a young mother and health nut, I was less than happy to hear these remarks. I don't have (or want) cable television, largely because I don't want the noise of pop culture infiltrating my family. Everywhere women turn, we are hearing more than more insults. Television shows berate thin women, insisting that anyone under a size seven is anorexic. Tabloids insult full-figured women by claiming that anyone over this size is a cow. I, for one, have had enough.

I support adoption whole-heartedly; I have two adopted siblings and my husband and I are considering adoption in the relatively near future. However, body-image issues have no place in that decision. I have no fears regarding the physical effects of pregnancy, because I know that these supposed "damages" are easily erased by fitness efforts.

As a fitness expert herself, Jillian Michaels should be well aware of this reality. If you take good care of your body, pregnancy is no big deal. Within two weeks of giving birth to my own daughter, I was back in my size-2 jeans with a flat tummy and fit muscles. I didn't starve myself or resort to the dangerous weight-loss tactics promoted by pillmongerers like Jillian Michaels. Instead, I gave birth naturally. I ate real food. I exercised. I breastfed. These simple measures-- not harsh stimulant diet pills like those promoted by Jillian Michaels-- can make any mother fit and sexy. Self-esteem is the key to post-partum fitness.

Jillian Michaels claims to promote self esteem, but in one fell swoop, she insulted many of her biggest fans and murdered the self-esteem of many expecting mothers and women who have recently given birth. If even Jillain Michaels claims that pregnancy ruins the body, many new mothers will assume that all efforts at weight loss are effective. They'll turn to depression and comfort-food and will never regain their pre-baby sense of self-satisfaction.
