Jim Carrey, Jenny McCarthy Break Up

Funnypeople Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy announced their breakup today via social networking site Twitter. It's currently unclear why they've decided to go their separate ways, but the split appears to be amicable. According to People, Jim Carrey's rep commented "Jim and Jenny have recently decided to end their five-year relationship." Fans of the pair will likely be disappointed by the news - unlike many other celebrity couples, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy seemed to have shared a genuine bond.

The original announcement over their breakup was issued by Jim Carrey on his Twitter page (@JimCarrey). He tweeted that he was happy for the blessings he and McCarthy had shared over the course of their relationship. Jenny McCarthy followed suit not long after, describing Carrey as "a leading man" in her heart on her own Twitter page (@JennyfromMTV).

Over the course of their five years together, the pair certainly shared a lot between their two families. Their relationship saw the birth of Carrey's first grandchild - his daughter Jane gave birth to a son named Jackson Riley Santana on February 26, 2010. Jenny's son, Evan, was diagnosed with autism in 2005. Beginning in 2007, she began speaking out about autism and acted as a spokeswoman for the issue. She published a book, entitled "Louder than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism" about her experiences in raising an autistic child in late 2007. Jenny McCarthy withstood a lot of negative media surrounding her activist efforts against autism, due in part to her claims that vaccination had caused her son to become autistic.

All in all, their breakup seems to be scandal-free so far. This breakup appears to be one of the few celebrity splits in recent memory that been handled with class. Unlike the Sandra Bullock/Jesse James controversy or the continuing sagas of Jon & Kate or Tiger & Elin, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy appear to be going their separate ways as friends. Jenny has stated that she will continue to support Jim's adult daughter, Jane.

Regardless of their friendly parting, the media are sure to be all over this story in days to come. Hopefully there won't be any cheating allegations, sex tapes or any of the other common celebrity attention-grabbing tactics involved. Wouldn't it be nice if two celebrities were just able to split without there being a media frenzy?
