Jim Parsons Emmy Win a Big Comedy Bang

Jim Parsons' Emmy win may not be a huge surprise. Yet the Jim Parsons Emmy victory was a difficult one, even though he was considered overdue. Standing in his way was a two-time defending champion, a three-time winner with one last shot, and other comic powerhouses. However, neither past winners or past snubs stood in the way this time around. With the Jim Parsons Emmy triumph, the Academy now has to live with letting Sheldon Cooper among their ranks.

The star of The Big Bang Theory prevailed for the first time in Best Actor Comedy, on his second opportunity. After losing to Alec Baldwin last year, Parsons became the favorite to end Baldwin's two-year winning streak this year. But Tony Shalhoub, Steve Carell, Larry David and Matthew Morrison also looked to pull a surprise.

Although the Jim Parsons Emmy win was predicted, it was not a sure thing. Baldwin was still the defending champ, despite 30 Rock's recent struggles. In addition, Shalhoub had gotten one last Monk nomination, and as critics have bemoaned, the Academy is fond of honoring him. Carell is also planning to leave his show soon, while Morrison was riding the Glee train of momentum.

However, since Parsons lost narrowly last year, and since The Big Bang Theory keeps getting bigger, this was considered his year. In addition, he submitted an episode in which Sheldon gets drunk at an awards banquet, in typically insane Sheldon fashion. But Jim Parsons' Emmy speech was much more sober, and more comprehensible to regular humans.

With the victory, Baldwin has been officially dethroned as the male TV king of comedy, at least for now. But given how Parsons and Sheldon have turned The Big Bang Theory into a ratings hit, it may take a while for Baldwin to get back up.

Jim Parsons' Emmy triumph gives the show extra momentum in its new time slot. After staking a claim to Monday night, The Big Bang Theory now looks to control the ultra-crowded, 8 pm Thursday night period. Given how both fans and critics have embraced the show, it stands to be the early favorite against Bones, Community, The Vampire Diaries and ABC's new My Generation.

Fans are still a little concerned, especially since Sheldon enters Season 4 with a possible love interest for the first time. Despite how irritating and crazy Sheldon can get, fans are afraid to see him change in any way. The Jim Parsons Emmy victory further proved how people love Sheldon just the way he is - at least from a distance.

Viewers can still watch Parsons' Emmy winning work on Monday nights at 9:30 pm, before Season 4 begins on Thursday, September 23 at 8 pm.
