Veteran singer Jimmy Buffett was released from a Sydney hospital today after being admitted for a fall he took from a concert stage. Buffett was ending his show Wednesday night at the Hordern Pavillion when he walked to the edge of the stage to shake hands with audience members. It appears he misjudged the edge of the stage and fell into the crowd, lapsing into unconsciousness and bleeding from a head injury.

According to Dr. Gordian Fulde, an audience member who helped Buffett before an ambulance arrived on scene, the fall was a bad one and the doctor was concerned about spinal cord injuries. Buffett regained consciousness prior to being assessed by emergency medical technicians and transported to Sydney's St. Vincent Hospital.

Buffett was treated for his head injury, which required several stitches to close and was assessed by CT scan for brain injury. He was listed in stable condition after the tests and was released from hospital Thursday.

Buffett isn't the first entertainer to take a bad fall from the stage recently. Steven Tyler, the lead singer of the band Aerosmith, fell from the side of a stage catwalk in South Dakota in August 2009 during one of the band's concerts. He was helped back on stage by concert security but was then airlifted to a local hospital shortly afterward.

Tyler sustained head and neck injuries and a broken shoulder. The band canceled the rest of its 2009 concert dates except for two October shows in Hawaii. The tour cancellation precipitated an already-incendiary rift in the band and lead guitarist Joe Perry announced in November of 2009 that Tyler had left the band. They have since reconciled and toured throughout much of 2010. Steven Tyler is currently a judge on the network show "American Idol."

In August 1994, Buffett crashed his Grumman G-44 Widgeon seaplane while taking off in Massachusetts. The plane landed in the water and Buffett was able to swim to safety with only minor injuries.

Jimmy Buffett's management has not yet updated the singer's condition since his release from hospital and the accident's effect on his current tour schedule is unknown.
