Jimmy Carter & Barack Obama: Brothers from Different Mothers

The Correlations Between the Carter & Obama Administrations

Snidely Whiplash
Carter & Obama - two peas in a pod. Mirror images. Each have many similarities. Let's explore, shall we?

Jimmy Carter is a very smart man. He attended the Naval Academy. He hoped to be a nuclear technician on nuclear powered ships. He was a governor. He is a Democrat. He is a Liberal. He is a Progressive. He certainly espouses some funky ideas.

Barack Obama is a very smart man. He attended Harvard. He was a lawyer, community agitator and local politician. He is a Democrat. He is a Progressive. He certainly espouses some funky ideas.

Now consider the following:

BOTH were, politically speaking, completely unqualified for the Presidency.

BOTH were very unlikely nominees from their Party, but events interceded in their favor to see them to the nominations.

BOTH were politically fortunate to arrive just as Republicans had made a mess of it.

Ford, Carter's opponent in 1976 was seen, fairly or not so, as Nixon Jr, and we had had enough of Nixon.

McCain, Obama's opponent in 2008 was seen, fairly or not so, as Bush Jr., and we had had enough of Bush.

Watergate and the associated misery led to Carter's election. It was Vietnam, Watergate and Nixon fatigue more then anything else that elected Carter.

Iraq, 9/11 and other associated miseries led to Obama's election. It was War on Terror, Iraq and Bush fatigue more then anything else that elected Obama.

Ford unfairly carried any associative burden left over from Nixon.

McCain unfairly carried any associative burden left over from Bush.

The election of Jimmy Carter was the culmination of Vietnam, anti-war efforts, McGovern's drubbing in '72 and Ford's pardon of Nixon for any Watergate events.

The election of Barack Obama was the culmination of 9/11, the War on Terror, anti-war efforts and Kerry's defeat in 2004.

But for the pre-existing conditions neither of these politically inept men would have ever been elected. They are the quintessential example of opportune positioning and being in the right place at the right time. But for the unrest of a nation these two gentlemen could have never been elected at all.

They were not elected because they were the best people for the job. They were elected because unrest and dissatisfaction were rampant among the populace. People, when faced with misery will often make a 180 degree turn in hopes of ending the misery.

Sometimes people really will make a change for change's sake!

When someone places a 100 lb rock on your chest all ya want to do is get the damn thing off of ya, right? So what if in extricating oneself from beneath the weight we smash a few windows or doors? Gotta get that damn rock off us, right?

Well folks, you can see where I am headed, right?

This is nothing more than non-violent revolution. The opposition so exacerbates the miseries of the common man that they will go along with nearly anything to end the misery. The election of Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama clearly demonstrate this principle.

Lastly, two points.

In both the Carter and Obama elections we see Democrats RESPOND to whatever conditions exist with the election of ideologues - Carter was one and Obama is most assuredly one. The powers that be amongst the Left, not the individual voter, but the powers that be have demonstrated that when misery rises they see this as their golden opportunity to put in their agenda - not just change figureheads, but actually try to install an agenda to suit their ideological wishes.

The economy under Jimmy Carter grew worse month by month. So far we see a repeat in the Obama Administration. IN FAIRNESS, Obama was handed a mess, but his FIXES are making it worse, just like Carter's fixes for economic malaise made it worse. CHECK THE HISTORY before ya chime in and disagree.

The second salient point is that the gambit by the Progressive/Democrat shakers and movers will fail, AGAIN!

See, instead of fixing the ills of a nation in the best and most effective manners of non-partisan getting it done, AT BOTH OPPORTUNITIES the shakers and movers on the Left, both then and now, chose to work under cover of emergency TO INSTALL THEIR AGENDA, regardless of whether or not their agenda is the best fix for the problem.

INSTEAD of doing non-partisan things that will fix a problem, they stick to their playbook, regardless if the pre-mapped out plays are the best genuine solutions to the very real and bipartisan problems or not.

So far as we can see, both in reviewing the Carter Administration and thus far Obama's machinations, we find our leaders NOT installing bipartisan solutions that will solve our immediate issues, but instead are devoting resources and money to install their long-term agendas.

Is this the best time for that? When a nation is mired in astronomical debt, is that really the best time to throw TRILLIONS toward remaking an imperfect but still great health system in a nation? When we are so in debt we can't see above the piles of bills, is that really a good time to want to reform much of how the US does business?

I mean if business is the engine of American prosperity, and it is, and we are less then prosperous at the moment, is that the best time to purpose business reforms that raise taxes, cause jobs to be lost and to try to install a decidedly Progressive slant on economy, society and government?

Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama were both the beneficiaries of unrest and desire for an end to the misery. Both men were clearly not the best choices. Both men capitalized on misery. And misery put two of the most ideological and inept men in power.

Now a nation pays, just like it did in the late 1970's when Nixon fatigue led to Carter. Now Bush fatigue led to Obama.

HISTORY! PICK UP A BOOK! Amazing what one can learn when they part with their partisanship and actually look to facts to learn things. Course, first one has to get the fools to part with their predisposed ideas for this to do any good, so . . . .

If one cannot see the absolute dead on correlations, you need to just go away. I hear Palau is welcoming all kinds of folks. Call 'em!

I agree with you and with JC. Brothers from different mothers! Great comparison. Let's just hope a Reagan brother from another mother shows up to save us!

Whip, you and I are thinking about the same topics. I came close to tackling this subject. It is definitely a second Jimmy Carter term.

Interesting take - You made points I had not yet considered. Well done.

I can't argue with your analysis, but we should remember that 100 lb rock came from somewhere. If either side fails to keep there reps' feet to fire, the elected chuckleheads tend to lose sight of their roots.

America hasn't learned from Carter's mistakes, but unfortunately, Obama and his people have, hence the larger-than-life cult of personality his handlers have cultivated for him.

  • Tony Vega9/21/2009

Your page one...is an indication that we as a people do not learn from our mistakes...

  • Nancy Canfield9/21/2009

Hell, I'm smarter than Carter! LOL!
