Jimmy Fallon: Watching Videos of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Before the Show Begins

Shawn Thomas
Jimmy Fallon has emerged in a sneaky start onto the stage of late night comedy. NBC has been advertising for viewer's to visit the new Jimmy Fallon website. The website shows short clips (1 to 4 minutes or so) mostly doing things around the studio and answering user questions. He has also introduced viewers to some of his writers and to his announcer Steve Higgins. I wanted to offer some of my early impressions on the new Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show that will soon launch on NBC.

The current Late Night TV host Conan O'Brien has announced this is last show will be on February 20th, 2009. He will then be moving to take over Jay Leno's show the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Jay Leno has announced that his last show will be at the end of May, on May 29, 2009. Jimmy Fallon is expect to take over at the beginning of March, on March 2nd, 2009.

So far, I have been a little disappointed as to the videos I have been seeing appear by Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy had several Saturday Night Live contributors appear to help him with his videos. In one video Jimmy Fallon had Fred Armisen pretend that he was being a guest who was difficult. Fred acted in such a way to make it hard for Jimmy to conduct the interview. In another video SNL regular Will Forte came by to give Jimmy Fallon his idea for the theme song for the show. It was somewhat silly and a good segment. However, the house band The Roots wants to do their own theme song.

In another video segment, Jimmy Fallon introduced everyone to his writers and the said a little about themselves. Other videos have featured users making videos asking Jimmy a question. Some of these have been entertaining and fun. Such questions have asked Jimmy about what he plans to do with the show and the set. Other questions have asked him about his announcer. Jimmy has continued to conduct standup comedy while he has been preparing for the show. One of the videos takes you along with for a few minutes to show you a few of his jokes during the routine. This is similar to what Jay Leno often did, working on standup comedy and doing his show on NBC.

Overall, I have been a little disappointed with the videos that Jimmy Fallon has put up on the site. Some have been mildly entertaining, others have not been. Each video has a short commercial you will have to sit through and "watch" before you can actually watch the video. The videos gave a unique way to see how the new Jimmy Fallon show on NBC will look before it actually begins.
