Jimmy Smits Stars in Cane

Vicki Gamble
Jimmy Smits opened the premier of Cane, in the only way he knows how to, dressed for success. In a polished suit with a fancy handkerchief peeking out of the pocket, Jimmy first appeared on screen talking on the phone to the Senator, watching his family celebrate the business and their success.

As the premier moved forward Jimmy's character, Alex Vega, changes moods like a chameleon changes color. We see his passion for his family, his love for his wife, and his natural instinct for protection. But clearly this Cuban-American family man has some baggage that is revealed slowly throughout the show. Alex, who appears to us as the loving family man, ends the premier of Cane by having some one killed. This little peek of his character lets us know that this is a show that will have many twists and turns. It almost seems like a Cuban version of The Sopranos.

The family industry is sugar and rum. And unlike the Sopranos, this business is legit. Although the family was torn a part years ago by the business, and a three year old girl was abducted and killed, they keep on going. The back story is told through Jimmy Smit's memories and is portrayed in black and white throughout the show. The story line divulges a little bit of information at a time and we learn the history of the characters, and their personalities. We learn that Alex was taken in by Poncho Duque, after being sent to America buy his family in the Cuban Revolution. He marries Poncho's daughter (technically his half sister), and becomes an heir to the family business.

Jimmy Smits doesn't let us down. His acting is flawless. Starting out years ago on NYPD Blue, LA Law, and The West Wing, Jimmy adds one more notch to his resume. He appeared on The View a few days ago and talked with the hosts about his new show. He stated that he was drawn to it because of the writing. Co-host Sherri Sheppard did not let him forget that she saw his back end years ago on NYPD Blue, and that it looked very well. Smiling, Jimmy simply said, "Thank you."

Jimmy Smits was born July 9, 1955 in Brooklyn, NY. He has been acting for years. He has appeared on numerous television shows, on the big screen, and even daytime soaps. He has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his acting.
