Jimmy Sommers' CD "a Holiday Wish" and More

The Joy of Sax

Kim Rojas
Less than a decade young, the funky, fresh, romantic saxophonist has, like most successful musicians, been playing most of his life. After a music scholarship in college, he went to L.A. for 10 years playing bars, night clubs and parties. To hear his music it's amazing that he wasn't snapped up sooner by a producer. But his time came with his first release in 1999 titled"James Cafe".

Less than two years later, the "360 Urban Groove" hit the ears of jazz lovers the world 'round. Still young in the limelight, his two albums were gaining recognition enabling him to produce a third in 2003 titled: "Lovelife". But, for some reason, my personal favorite is his "a holiday wish" CD. Maybe it's the familiar songs, or the laid back melody applied to the music of our American culture, or maybe it's just that it's plain good music! The Christmas CD, his latest, came out in 2004 and is the perfect holiday party music. It's sophisticated enough to not be overpowering, but provocative enough to be noticed.

With the opening song the music takes the soul away to a beautiful place where the dance floor waits for partners to glide into those warm memories. Lovers of music will toast to a brand new ambiance of holiday cheer with favorites such as "Greensleeves" and "Silent Night". Candlelight is not optional; Jimmy Sommer's music makes the noise of the world go away. Pause a moment and let this beautiful music bring you away with the simplicity and grace that only his saxophone can achieve. The busyness of life is silenced with this deserved musical enjoyment; it makes one believe again!

There is also plenty of sparkle in a holiday wish to step in time to "Santa Baby" and to find out who's naughty or nice swinging on the dance floor to the upbeat tempo of "Santa Claus is coming to town". The funky, jazz piano perfectly compliments the flavor of this CD.

This music is appropriate for any holiday occasion whether entertaining a few close friends at home, or if it's the center of the office party filled with cheer. Jimmy Sommers' sax keeps the occasion alive. The music itself creates the party; when listening to this, the thought of being alone never enters the mind. It's beautiful; it's what Christmas should be: family, fun and friends. Break out the party attire, take the hand of your choice and strut into December, but remember you'll cascade away from Jimmy Sommers' a holiday wish more musically enriched than you came.
