J.K. Rowling Announces that Harry Potter's Mentor, Dumbledore, is Gay!

Heather Michelle
Everyone knew that Harry Potter was not ending with the final book. There are still more movies to be made! But who knew that J.K. Rowling would have such a surprise left up her sleeve?

It was a simple question that led to this very simple answer. Had Dumbledore ever been in love? Yes, he had, with his best friend Gellert Grindelwald. The part of the final book that speaks about Grindelwald and Dumbledore's relationship is very dark. They would pass notes between houses discussing the eradication of muggles. As we all know, Dumbledore turned out to be on the "good" side, but his "friend" turned to the dark arts. Whether there was an actual relationship between the two men or whether Dumbledore's love was one sided has not been disclosed.

Of course there has been outrageous support and as well as rage at this breaking news. Having such an important character in a children's book series turn out to be gay is a milestone that had yet to be reached. Unfortunately, this was not more prevalent in the book and readers had no idea until Rowling outed him. Then there are those that are outraged that such a beloved character could be "morally" corrupt.

Now let's get real. People are people whether they are gay or straight. I'm pretty sure that the witches and wizards in J.K. Rowling's book are people just like us muggles and are bound to the same set of emotions. Sure, some people go psychotic like Lord Voldemort and there are real heroes like Harry Potter, so why should Albus Dumbledore have to be a heterosexual? I can't think of a good reason.

Am I shocked at this discovery? Absolutely. Do I care? Not so much. I believe in tolerance. I am actually disappointed that this bit of news had to come about after the books were written. No, it really isn't important information as far as the character is concerned. Dumbledore was a great wizard and would have been whether he was gay or straight.

This entire news release comes at a strange time however. In all the years since Harry Potter debuted, did nobody ever ask about Dumbledore's love life? Nobody ever wondered why he was single, or why any of the Hogwarts teachers were single? Was Minerva McGonagle a lesbian as well? Perhaps she and Professor Trelawny had a little something going on. My point is that I think J.K Rowling has brought this issue up now completely for more publicity. The books are all out. People are now going to go back and read the stories again or run out to purchase new books in order to find some clue that they missed the first time; a clue that proves Dumbledore was gay.

Personally, I think it is brilliant and there is a reason why this woman is the only billionaire author!

I feel like I'm late to the party....it does seem odd to say, "Oh by the way...."

I didn't hear the news about this. I have to say I am disappointed. I don't see where knowing is necessary either way. The books are not sexual so it shouldn't need to be "outed".

Dumbledore's character worked with children every day. It was really unnecessary for her to put out the comment that he was gay. Why couldn't Dumbledore's relationship been just the normal two friends getting into trouble together. Friendship does not always lead to wise decisions in the young, yet she had shown that Dumbledore had tried to do what he could to undo the damage. So why did Rowlings then have to redamage his reputation and what he stood for. I find her comments demeaning to the books. Luckily she was not so stupid as to make them prior to selling her last book.

lol I just don't understand what the big deal is about his sexual preferrence but I do see this as a publicity ploy by Rowling.

Well done, Heather! And Nick, you hit it on the head; none of the books have any sexual content, so why did Rowling see the need to insert anything about Dumbledore's sexuality now? Simple: now that the book series is finished, the pathologically narcissistic Ms. Rowling can't deal with being out of the spotlight, so she said something outrageous and completely unnecessary; she destroyed her brilliant creation and her integrity as a writer. Selfishly, she thought only of herself, not her readers. Let her be a lesson in the lapse of ethics among all of us who write in any genre. There is a time and place to speak up, and a time and place to shut up - a concept lost by Ms Rowling.
