The most dedicated Harry Potter fans from all over the world were glued to their computer screens this morning, awaiting J.K Rowling's announcement about her mysterious new project. Pottermore was named a week ago as something new for readers to enjoy, but it was only today that the full details were announced.
In a special video message, the lady who created the magical world of Hogwarts said, "I wanted to give something back to the fans that have followed Harry so devotedly over the years, and to bring the stories to a new digital generation." Pottermore is set to be an interactive journey of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, though Rowling has added that the other books will follow suit in time. On the site, users will be able to live the book, as they are sorted into one of the four Hogwarts houses, and can earn points in class the same way the characters do throughout the series.
As someone who has been a fan of the boy wizard since his creation, this is an exciting day. I am one of those people who devoured every page of every book many times over, looking for hints and clues about what the future held for Harry Potter and his friends. Through J.K Rowling's words, I was able to get inside his world and experience every obstacle with him. The idea that this is literally going to be true through Pottermore is absolutely amazing to me.
One of the most interesting things for the fans to look forward to is the inclusion of previously unpublished material, and getting to hear information Rowling states she has been holding onto for years.
Starting with background on James Potter's parents, much more about the Marauder era and how Molly and Arthur Weasley met. In fact, there is barely anything I can think of that was previously unexplained that I wouldn't want to hear about.
UK Harry Potter enthusiast, Clare Dugmore, is interested in some of the darker areas of the series, saying, "I remember JK Rowling mentioning in an interview just after DH (Deathly Hallows) was released that her editors told her to cut out the details on how to make Horcruxes because its was too dark. I'd LOVE to see that."
Eva Smahlikova from the Czech Republic simply wants to know more about the stars of the story, "I'd love to get some background info about the characters, something that was only briefly mentioned in the books but didn't develop further as it wasn't relevant to the main plot. For example, how and why Lupin was bitten."
Whichever aspect of the series fans want to delve into, Muggles all over the world are buzzing about Pottermore and the things to come. Sadly, the anticipation is set to go on for a while yet as the official launch date is scheduled for October 2011.
