Job Hiring Rates Reach the Highest Point Since 2006

How to Make it Work for You

Maggie OLeary
In April 2011, employers hired more new employees than they had in any month since February 2006, reports the federal Labor Department. Over 244,000 jobs were added to the job market last month. This far exceeded analysts' estimates. In return, the economy rebounded and stock prices have climbed as a result. This is not only good news for investors, but it's great news for those of us that are unemployed, under-employed, or just looking for a job change. You can put the job market to work for you in several ways.

First, the increased number of jobs means more people working. If you have a small business or you contract work on the side, step up your marketing efforts. Get your business card and flyers out to as many potential customers as you can. Don't have a business card? Hit up sites like VistaPrint for free cards and other business tools and pass them out to everyone you see. And don't forget to stay in contact with current and previous customers - don't let them forget about you.

If you are looking to start a business, now is a great time. Direct sales businesses are booming, and independent contractors are finding new markets for their trades. The economy is improving, and with more people working, more customers will be able to afford your products and services. But remember to start small, and work your way up. Don't try to build a Fortune 500 company overnight. Slow and steady wins the race.

If you are looking for a job, or looking to switch jobs, now is the perfect time. Brush up your resume and start sending it out. It's okay if you aren't good with resume skills - check out a couple books from the library to help you tweak your resume. You can also talk to your local Workforce Development Office or similar - they give free classes and assistance in this area. However, if you have to spend the money to have a professional help you improve your resume, don't hesitate. It is a small investment that will pay off many times over. Employers are looking for good employees, so strike while the iron is hot!

You don't have to stay in a job situation you don't love just because the economy has been rough. Things are improving, and it is going to have a domino effect for all of us. Don't wait for the ripple to get to you - go out and find it. And take advantage of the services that are out there to help you.
