Job Opportunities for Accounting Degrees

Karen LoBello
The Department of Labor's Bureau of Statistics points to the fact that 18 to 26% more jobs will be created in the accounting industry through 2014. Anyone seeking to earn an accounting degree should obviously like to work with numbers. Analytical thinking and technological expertise go hand in hand with this profession. The accounting field is highly competitive. In order to land the job you desire, it is generally necessary to obtain a bachelor's or an associate's degree in accounting. Many careers and diverse opportunities await an individual who has earned a degree in accounting.

Income Tax Preparer

My income tax preparer actually runs his own business. He works hard during the first four months of the year and then opts to relax and travel during the remainder of the year. He provides a great service, going directly into clients' homes. This cuts down on his overhead expenses while providing an invaluable, convenient service to patrons. Accountants can also work at a number of firms known for handling income tax preparations.

Public Accountant

A public accountant generally works for a firm, although some do have their own practices. A public accountant either has or is working toward certification as a certified public accountant (C.P.A.). This entails experience, a bachelor's degree, and a qualifying score on a stringent exam. A public accountant deals with different clients' needs. These often include preparing taxes, researching and reviewing data, auditing, and performing any other financial services that the client requires. Due to the emergence of advanced computer technology, much of the 'money counting' is done by computers. Therefore, an accountant's job becomes more analytical and geared toward decision-making.

Corporate Accountant

Corporate accountants, also known as 'management accountants', work for one particular corporation. These positions can be very lucrative. A corporate accountant is a key figure in keeping the company on track. These accountants handle cost accounting, budget management and analysis. They are strategic managers, integral parts of the corporation. Individuals who land corporate accountant positions have the potential of becoming Chief Financial Officers for large corporations.

Forensic Accountant

A forensic accountant can combine his talents as a sleuth with that of accounting and auditing. These accountants often work for law enforcement departments. They can testify as expert witnesses in court. Another venue they enjoy is working for the government, perhaps as I.R.S. agents.

Financial Manager

Banks, credit unions, mortgage companies and savings and loan groups employ financial managers. Their jobs can include the authorization of loans and business solicitation. They have a hand in the investment of the bank's funds. These managers use their expertise to oversee banking operations such as lending, mortgages, trusts and electronic banking.

I knew a lot of accountants in Northern Indiana that struggled to find jobs, especially around Elkhart where the unemployment levels are still high. Accountancy and IT always used to be safe, but these days it's hard to know what careers are safe at all.

My husband and I are also income tax preparers that go to people's homes. It's unique to us in this area. We don't have accounting degrees - just lots of training and apprenticeships.
