Job Opportunities for Holders of a Homeland Security Bachelor's Degree

Kristie Sweet
The Department of Homeland Security was created after the events of 9/11. Besides the government agency, many other homeland security positions were created, not only in government but in the business world. These positions offer many opportunities for job seekers, but most require a bachelor's degree for employment.

The bachelor's degree in homeland security is available both online and from traditional universities. These institutions typically have a criminal justice program that includes the homeland security major. The first two years of the homeland security degree are made up of the general education requirements for most bachelor's degrees: science, sociology, English, math. The last two years may include basic law courses, negotiation, field techniques.

Both online and traditional universities often required students in the homeland security program to specialize. The choices are typically twofold: standard homeland security and security of technology. As one might expect, the standard specialization is more appropriate for more militant kinds of positions while the technology specialization may be more suited to business.

The standard Bachelor's degree qualifies graduates to work in law enforcement at all levels of government, security guard positions, and customs agent jobs. This degree is particularly attractive to many who are looking for a career upon leaving the military.

The tech option may seem to have fewer opportunities for employment, but that isn't true. Businesses have added homeland security jobs because they now see the need to protect their networks. They know that consumers know something of network safety and that those people will more likely do business with a company they feel cares about such protection.

Homeland security is a career area where jobs are likely to continue to develop. Numerous publications predict computer technology to be a growing career field, and "Careers in Homeland Security" suggests computer security will be a big factor in that growth. Security jobs in general are likely to increase as the country becomes more and more security conscious.

Homeland security careers are numerous, and the outlook is bright for further jobs. The variety of choices makes it a Bachelor's degree appropriate for a wide variety of skill sets. Whether online or from a traditional university, a Bachelor's degree in homeland security will open many doors.
