1. Update your wardrobe- Be prepared for an interview and buy appropriate clothing. Make sure to have a few options. Do your dress pants still fit? Are there stains on your shirt? Presentation is worth the effort!
2. Update your resume- Did you update your resume for your latest employment? Is it written in an acceptable format? Try a computer program or use an employment agency. A bad resume can cost you a job!
3. Practice interview skills- Make a list of questions most employers will ask. Think of your answers before an interview. Research the logistics of the company and position you desire. Try a practice interview on friends!
4. Find childcare- What will you do when you find employment? Do you have daycare for your children? Don't look for a sitter when you find a job. Have a childcare plan in place!
5. Find transportation- Do you have your own vehicle? Will you be taking the bus? Is your spouse going to drive you to work? Can you get to your job if you start late at night? Find access to transportation!
6. Try upgrading- Take your GED test or a first aid course. Don't let your certifications expire. Enroll in the latest computer course. Stay current and upgrade your skills!
7. Find references- Are your references current or from your high school days? Is the contact numbers accurate? Change your references based on the job you desire. Tell your contacts employers may call!
8. Health issues- Do you have medical issues that may stop you from working? Are your eyeglasses the right prescription? Have you been for a checkup with your doctor and dentist? Eliminate medical barriers!
9. Financial Issues- Can you afford to pay rent? Do you have gas for your car? How will you put food on the table for your family? Access Employment Insurance, welfare and local supports. Take care of your basic needs!
10. Legal Issues- Do you need a work permit? Do you have your SIN card? Are there bail or parole restrictions? Do you have proper ID? Are you licensed to drive? Eliminate legal issues!
Think of your employment barriers when you are looking for work. Are there things you can help eliminate? Do you have a childcare plan? Can you get to work? Are there any legal issues? Do you need ESL? Should you upgrade your skills? Are your references up to date? Get a physical and buy nice interview clothes. Get ready to job search today!
