1. Make sure there are opportunities for the second career or new profession. Research the major trends and growth areas as well as new job opportunities and competency requirements. Use a variety of sources for your search including: networking, library resources, reading articles both online and offline. Top off your search by writing a brief analysis of your findings. The more you know, the better.

2. Know thyself. Make a list of your skills and qualifications. Make sure you also include such things as your accomplishments, transferrable skills, values, interests, your style and personality. This will help you create a more well-rounded profile of who you are thus making the job search a lot easier on you.

2. Rehearse well and often a thirty second speech that markets who you are.

3. Use online job applications and research the sites of those prospective companies. Always keep a journal of when and to whom you sent your resumes. This is important for the follow up strategies.

Take a networking workshop at a career and development office in your local area.
