First, gather information about yourself and compile a business portfolio. You will need copies of your birth certificate, drivers license or identification card, Social Security card, High School and / or College transcripts, as well as any job certifications, training, or rewards and of course your resume. Make sure it is in clear cover sheets and inside of a black binder (do not keep any loose papers other than copies of your resume inside) this will help to give a hint of professionalism.
A common mistake for most job searchers is their resume. You will want to make sure it is clean, plain, and organised. You will want it to be un-bulleted and have it all on one page (this is to ensure that employers will not lose it). You also want to make sure it has your name, address, and phone number, usually in the upper left-hand corner.
Once you have all these items you can begin your job search. Start online with web-sites like Careerbuilder.com, Monster.com, and Hotjobs.com , where employers can search and view your posted resume. You can also search for local jobs in your area that fit criteria you enter into the search boxes. Return emails or calls take anywhere from a day to several weeks.
While you are waiting for results from online search engines it would not hurt to open up a newspaper and search the classified advertisements. You can search the newspapers' web-site as well were they usually have more listings. When all else fails, you can 'pound the pavement' and walk around (or drive) looking for 'Help Wanted' or 'Now Hiring' signs. Filling out applications then and there; turning them back in with a copy of your resume. Make sure you have your portfolio and extra copies of your resume with you in case you get an interview on the spot.
Now all you require is a bright smile and a positive attitude for a successful job search! Happy Hunting!
