Job Vs Self Employment is a Matter of Choice, Preference and Commitment

David Farrell
You see it all the time. Someone gets a new job and is happy. He or she pours his soul into the job, investing a lot of himself only to either be fired, laid off, or waking every morning hating every aspect of the job. All the effort to secure your spot with destiny was really nothing but a big waste of time, dedication, and energy.

America: Job vs. risky gray areas.

One of the definite pros of working a job is that when you work on a time clock or salary, a weekly paycheck is a guarantee. You have the security of knowing that you are going to make this amount of money a week and can budget accordingly. You don't have to worry about if and when you will land the next cash windfall. This security comes with a high price, though, a price most Americans are willing to pay. No matter how good you are, you will always have a limit to your income potential and have to answer to a boss. Granted, some people don't mind these aspects as much and put up with them.

The alternatives to this are to be self-employed or own a business. Unfortunately, many don't have the time, money, resources, skill, or energy necessary to succeed at this time. Hence, many people have no option but to take a job.

Part time opportunities for extra income, although not an end in themselves, can mitigate the limitations and give one a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficiency. Annual tag sales, mowing lawns, a newspaper route, freelance writing, it could be anything. There are plenty of opportunities out there if you look.

A second job as a self-employed freelance writer tops my list.
